CONDITIONALS: WHAT ARE
THEM? IF… (IF CLAUSE)

● In English, there are 4 conditionals: I … (MAIN CLAUSE)


Zero, First, Second, and Third.

● Purpose: conditionals are used to


express that a particular situation may
occur if another particular thing
happens first.

● In terms of grammar, a conditional is a


sentence divided in two clauses (mini
sentence)

● In each type of conditional we use the


word “IF” (si condicional)
ZERO IF YOU HEAT WATER TO 100
DEGREES (IF CLAUSE)
CONDITIONAL IT BOILS (MAIN CLAUSE)
● This conditional is used to talk about things
that are true. Things that always happen if the If you heat the water to 100
condition are met. degrees, it boils

Ex: If you heat water to 100 degrees, it boils.

● As you can see, the sentences is divided in two


clauses:

The if clause, where the requirements or conditions


appear

If you heat water to 100 degrees

The second clause is where the results appear

If I do exercise, I am thin - If they don’t study, they fail the tests.

I am thin if I do exercise - They fail the tests if they don’t study.

If she is hungry, she eats - If he doesn’t work, he doesn’t earn money.

She eats if she is hungry - he doesn’t earn money if he doesn’t work.
