ENERGY
ELECTRICITY IN THE HOUSE

• After the electricity is generated at the power station, it is usually

sent to a substation through high-voltage cables. At the substation,
the voltage is reduced and the electricity is then distributed via
thick cables called transmission wires to our homes and other
buildings within the community. The electricity entering buildings,
whether for domestic or commercial use is called mains electricity .
ELECTRICITY IN THE HOUSE

• Since the electricity is a service provided by a company, it is first passed

through a meter, which registers the amount of electrical energy used.
• A transformer is a device used to reduce the voltage. The transformer
reduces the voltage to approximately 110 volts.
• Electricity meters are of two types, dial (analogue) or digital meter is
very simple to read.
HOW TO READ AN ANALOGUE (DIAL)
ELECTRICITY METER

• Looking at an analogue meter you will notice that there

are five dials, each numbered zero to nine. Starting on
the left, the first dial gives ‘ten thousands’ of units, the
second ‘thousands’ of units, the third ‘hundred’, the
fourth ‘tens’ and the fifth dial gives ‘ single’ units. The
meters are read clockwise then anticlockwise. Each unit
is kilowatt-hours (KWh).

CALCULATING ELECTRICITY USED

• To find the amount of electricity used, you can use the simple equation below:
• Amount of electricity used = second reading – first reading
• = 25049 – 23825 KWh
• =1224 KWh
• Therefore the household used 1224 KWh of electricity in four weeks.
WHAT IS THE METER READING
CALCULATING ELECTRICAL BILL
• ENERGY TRANSFERRED (kilowatt-hour, KWh) =POWER (kilowatts,
KW) x TIME (hour, h)
• COST OF ELECTRICITY = NUMBER OF KWH X COST PER KWH
• Electrical energy cost $0.30 per KWh. It cost $0.66 to do an hour’s
ironing. What is the power rating of the iron?
• Cost of electricity = number of kwh x 0.30
• Number of KWh = 0.66/0.30
• 2.2KW
