6 Complements and Objects:


Two types of objects direct object(Od)
indirect object( Oi)

Two types of complements subject complement(Cs)


object complement (Co)

-John carefully searched the room. (od)

- He had given the girl an apple.

• Features of Objects:
• 1- The direct object must be present in a sentence if there is indirect object. (i.e.)
we can exclude the indirect object or, in other word ,(Od) has a full meaning and
(Oi) is not full in meaning.

2- the indirect object almost always precedes the direct object.(i.e.) indirect +
direct.

3- indirect object is a noun referring to a person and direct object is something to


be done for the indirect object.

• Note: you feel that the sentence with indirect object is incomplete in meaning
and the sentence with direct object with a full meaning.

- The girl now is a student at a large university.

- His brother grew happier gradually.
Cs
- He is the chairman.
Cs
there is a direct relation between the subject complement(Cs) and the subject
(S.) itself.
• (Co)
-They make him the chairman every year.

Note: if we have an object only, we can see Co in the sentence.

Q. How do we differentiate between the sentence with 2 objects and a sentence with 1 object
+complement of the object?

The salesman showed him a new computer.


Oi Od
we have 2 objects here because of 2 different elements him and new computer.
He paints the wall purple.
O Oc
We have the same element the wall which is purple.
