Verb and its Complement

1. A direct object is a noun or pronoun that receives the action of the verb.
Ex. God gives blessings; man disposes them.
DO (noun) DO (pronoun)

2. An indirect object is a noun or pronoun that receives the direct object.


Indirect objects are only found in sentences that also have direct objects.
Ex. God gives people blessings.
IO (noun)
Ex. God gives them blessings.
IO (pronoun)

 A direct object receives the action of a verb. A direct object answers the
questions ''who'' or ''what.''
 An indirect object receives the action of the direct object, answering the
questions ''to or for whom or what.''

There are two main types of verbs

1. Action verbs

 Only Action verbs can have direct objects and indirect objects.

Ex. The class voted John.


Subject Transitive verb Direct object

Ex. The class voted John president.

2. Linking verbs (am, is, are, was were) or Verb of the senses (taste, feel,
appear, seem, sound, look etc.)

 Linking verbs connect the subject of a sentence with a subject


complement.

Ex. Tomato is a fruit.
