COMMON BREEDS OF SWINE IN PHILIPPINES Philippine Native Pig Characteristics: • Generally small in size • Mostly solid black or black and white • Sway back • Weak patterns Philippine Native Pig Traits: • Very prolific • Good mothering ability • Resistant to adverse condition • Adaptable to local rural farm conditions LANDRACE Characteristics: • Long, lean, white pig with 16 or 17 ribs • Large drooping ears • Long and relatively straight snout • Slight arch and nearly flat back LANDRACE Traits: • Sows produce plenty of milk • The location peaking at five weeks • Prolific • Good mothering ability Defect: • Weak hindlimb and pastern LARGE WHITE (Yorkshire) Characteristics: • Medium-size erect ears • Short and straight snout •Sturdy and strong legs • Short and big belly LARGE WHITE (Yorkshire) Traits: • Good mothering ability • Large litter size Defect: • Carcasses with thicker back fat DUROC Characteristics: • Second most recorded breed of swine in United States • Red pigs with dropping ears • Head is small proportion to body DUROC Traits: • Superior breed in terms of growth rate and feed efficiency • Good muscle quality • Resistant to stress Special note: • Popular sire for the production of slaughter pigs • Fast growth rate, better feed efficiency, good muscle development with desired carcass quality PIETRAIN Characteristics: • Spotted black and white • Medium size and erect ears • Moderately long and slightly dished snout PIETRAIN Traits: • Good reproductive performance • Good mothering ability Special note: • known for its good muscle development in ham, loin and shoulder HYBRID Characteristics: • Do not have distinguished physical appearance • Most are white with good muscle development Traits: • Highly prolific • Good fertility • Bigger and uniform litter (heavy litter) HYBRID Special notes: • Slaughter hybrid pigs are claimed for outstanding in - Growth rate - Feed conversion efficiency and; - Carcass quality THANK YOU!
