In general, the total Caribbean island visitors between

2010 and 2017 increased year to year. There was slight
decrease in 2012 for visitors staying on cruise ships and
slight decrease for visitors staying on island in 2016.
Starting in 2016, more visitors stayed on cruise ships
than on the island where before that, the reverse was
true.

The total number of arrivals on the island went up gradually from
one million in 2010 to roughly 2.75 million in 2015. It then stayed
at this level in 2016 until it rocketed to 3.5 million in 2017.
The volume of visitors who stayed on the island stood at about
0.75 million in 2010 and 2011. It then increased consistently
before reaching a plateau of 1.5 million which lasted from 2013 to
2017 except for a small dip in 2016. There were far fewer tourists
staying on cruise ships in 2010, at only around 0.25 million. After
some fluctuations over the following 2 years, the number started
climbing steadily, overtaking the number of those staying on the
island in 2016 and reaching 2 million in 2017.

Nowadays, people are facing newer environmental

challenges. Some people state that the extinction of
particular species of plants and animals is the prime
concern whereas I agree with the other side of the
view that at present there are more crucial
environmental issues. In my paragraphs below, I will
discuss both the views and explain why I agree with the
latter view.

There is no doubt that the fauna and flora help in
maintaining the balance of our Planet Earth. They build the
diversity of the ecological system and hence, it is vital to
preserve them. We are losing various species of plants and
animals because of excessive deforestation in order to
construct industries. It is important to take appropriate
measures in order to preserve the rare species of animals
and plants, which are on the verge of extinction. We can
achieve this by spreading awareness and educating the
people about the need to preserve our endangered
species.

However, in my opinion, there are other environmental problems that
need immediate attention. For example, air and water pollution have
become major concerns now. Due to urbanization, there is an
exponential rise in the number of vehicles on the roads and that has
reduced the air quality. People are forced to breathe polluted air which
causes various lung diseases. According to research done at Howard
university, cases of lung disease have increased by 27 times over the
years. Also, water pollution is another cause of concern. Due to bad
human habits like discharging factory effluents into water bodies,
access to pure water has reduced. As a result, many people and animals
die each year from drinking polluted water. As these problems directly
affect our health, in my opinion, they need more attention.
