(HUMAN SENSES)
Human’s Input output Channels
❖ A person’s interaction with the outside world occurs through
information being received and sent; input and output.
❖ In interaction with a computer, the human input is the data
output by the computer vice versa. Input in humans occurs
mainly through the senses and output through the motor
controls of the effectors. There are five major senses: sight,
hearing, touch, taste and smell.
❖ Vision, hearing and touch are the most important senses in
HCI. The fingers, voice, eyes, head and body position are the
primary effectors.
SIGHT
Why is sense of sight important in HCI?

• It also provides us with feedback when we


attempt to lift an object, for example. Consider
the act of picking up a glass of water. If we could
only see the glass and not feel when our hand
made contact with it or feel its shape, the speed
and accuracy of the action would be reduced.
HEARING
HEARING
The sense of hearing is often considered secondary to
sight, but we tend to underestimate the amount of
information that we receive through our ears. Close
your eyes for a moment and listen.What sounds can
you hear? Where are they coming from? What is
making them? As I sit at my desk I can hear cars passing
on the road outside, machinery working on a site
nearby, the drone of a plane overhead and bird song.
• But I can also tell where the sounds are coming from,
and estimate how far away they are. So from the
sounds I hear I can tell that a car is passing on a
particular road near my house, and which direction it
is traveling in. I know that building work is in progress
in a particular location, and that a certain type of bird
is perched in the tree in my garden.
TOUCH
TOUCH
Touch is our primary non-verbal communication channel for conveying
intimate emotions and as such essential for our physical and emotional
wellbeing. In our digital age, human social interaction is often
mediated.
SMELL
SMELL
• Smells are communication tools and, at the
same time, devices to elicit emotions in humans.
Human-Computer Interaction has recently
showed a growing interest in exploiting the
connection between emotions and the sense of
smell.
TASTE
TASTE
Touch, taste, and smell are an underexplored design
space in the context of interactive experiences. By
understanding the ways in which our senses process
information and how they relate to one another, it will
be possible to create richer experiences for
humantechnology interactions.
• We need to design interfaces that allow the stimulation of unexplored
sensory inputs as well as interfaces that take into account the
relationships between the senses. Digital Taste Interface is a method
for simulating the sensation of taste by actuating the human tongue
through electrical and thermal stimulation. AromaShooter is a smell-
delivery device, contains six scent cartridges and connects to a
computer via USB.
• Taste is an interface where the user can augment the flavors
of food and beverages by applying weak and controlled
electrical pulses on their tongue using electronically
enhanced everyday utensils such as spoons and beverage
bottles. It is crucial to determine the meaningful design
space for multisensory interactive experiences. At the same
time, it is also key to understand the unique properties of
each sensory modality before designing for their sensory
integration in the design of interactive systems.
