HAND
SAW

Learning
Objectives
At the end of the period, the students are expected to:

1 distinguish the different type of saws according to their teeth;

2 execute properly the using of hand saw considering the stages and
the sawing angle; and

3
adhere to the standard of sawing principle.
What is a
SAW?
- A saw is a hand tool used to cut
pieces of material into different length
and shapes.
- It is powered solely by human effort
and does not require batteries or an
electrical power
PARTS OF A
SAW
The blade is typically made
from steel and has a number
of sharp teeth running along
its bottom edge.
It shaped to hold and
apply pressure on the
cutting stroke

HOLDING
THE SAW
Hold the saw with your
forefinger extended along the
side of the handle.
POSITION OF
THE
WORKER
-Your dominant hand is on the saw...
-You want your non-dominant foot forward,
your dominant foot back, and you want
your non-saw hand positioned on the
workpiece to take all the weight off of the
back of the saw.
-Keep your elbow close to your body.
-Keep the saw, your wrist, elbow, shoulder
and right eye (left eye if you saw left
handed) in a single plane, aligned with the
cut line.
HOLDING
THE WORK
Make yourself comfortable.

With your non-dominant hand, hold the stock to

control it from moving.
STARTING
THE CUT
-Use your thumb/knuckle to guide
the blade for accuracy.

-Produce several slow back cuts

(pull) until you create a nice groove
or kerf.
FINISHING THE
CUT
Slow motion at pull stroke
to preventing from split resulting
to damage to work.
SAWING ANGLE
Angle the saw according to what cut you
need. For example, set the tool at a
45-degree angle for crosscuts and a 60-
degree angle for rip cuts.

future civil engineers, why How will your output be
do you need to be familiar affected by the way how
with this simple process you use the saw?

using the saw?
