AMBATO

INDEPENDENCE DAY
Background: The news and the libertarian
pronouncements of Portoviejo and Cuenca, made
Riobamba and Latacunga proclaim their independence
on November 11, 1820.The Spaniards defeated in the
armed action of Camino Real went to spend in Ambato
to reinforce their army.
Libertarian gesture: It was then that the
Ambateños joined the liberating current with the
absolute decision to achieve independence.

Thus, on the morning of November 12, 1820, using the

few weapons they could find at hand, the Ambateños
attacked the Spanish barracks and defeated Colonel
Fominaya's forces stationed in that plaza.
The patriots: Heroes of that historic
day were, among others, the brothers
Vicente, Teresa and Francisco Flor, Mariano
Navarrete, Lizandro and Joaquín Lalama,
José Suárez, Teodoro Barreto, Vicente
Guerrero, Ignacio Martínez, Tomás Sevilla
and Joaquín Riera.
Post-independence data: The Territorial
Division Law of Colombia of June 25, 1824,
designated it a canton of the province of
Chimborazo, a condition that it maintained until July
3, 1860, the date on which the province of Ambato
was created. The following year it was definitively
baptized with the name of the volcano that is
located there: Tungurahua. The Ambato city was
then designated as its capital.
Final message: The feeling of Homeland is
deeply rooted in the heart of Ambato and
Tungurahua, land of Juan Montalvo, Juan León
Mera, Juan Benigno Vela, Pedro Fermín Cevallos,
Luis A. Martínez and Celiano Monge, whose
resplendent feathers scratched the truths of the
past with the eagerness to spread his thoughts and
his literary writings.
