SCAFFOLDING HAZARDS AND PRECAUTIONS

Associated Hazards with Scaffolding

1. Falls Hazard- caused by slipping, unsafe
access, and the lack of fall protection.

2. Falling Object - Struck by falling tools / debris.

3. Scaffold collapse - caused by instability or

overloading, moving vehicle collision, Loose soil
or excavation near scaffold, heavy wind.

4. Specifications of Scaffolding and It’s Tag

System.

5. General Safety Precautions.

Fall Hazards

1. Falls may occur:

• While climbing on or off the scaffold

• Working on unguarded scaffold platforms

• When scaffold platforms or planks fail

2. Protecting Workers from Falls

• Guardrails, mid rail, toe board- Install along open sides & ends.

• Use Personal Fall Arrest Systems (PFAS) -anchorage, lifeline and body harness.

• Worker must be trained how to properly use PFAS

• Can use PFAS instead of guardrails on some scaffolds

Falling Object Protection
Protection from Falling Object

• Wear hardhats

• Area shall be barricaded and signs board to be displayed.

• Use panels or screens if material is stacked higher than the toe board

• Erect a net below the scaffold that will contain or deflect falling objects

• Tools and spanners shall be secured with body.

• Materials, clamps shall not drop or through.

• Bags shall be used for shifting.

Scaffold Collapse
Protection from Scaffold Collapse

• A competent third party certified person is allowed for scaffolding job.

•  While erection and modifications, red tag shall be display on height equal to eye level.

• If height exceeding the ratio, additional tie-in with nearby existing structure shall be given.

• Job shall be suspended in case of heavy wind more than 65kmph and rain.

• Provide access when scaffold platforms are more than 2 feet above or below a point of access.

• Permitted types of access.

• Ladders, such as portable, hook-on, attachable, stairway type, and built-ins
• Stair towers
• Ramps and walkways

• Soil must be compacted and even, and scaffolding erected on soil will need planks, or mudsills.

• Restrict vehicle movement.

Specification of Scaffolding and It’s Tag System.
 As per OSHA 29 CFR 1926.454 - Specification of Scaffold materials depends on Duty
Depends on the duty Tubing & Coupler Scaffolding, Scaffold diameter,
1. Light Duty Thickness of pipe are consider.
2. Medium Duty
3. Heavy Duty

 SCAFFOLDING TAG SYSTEM

Green Tag - Scaffolding ready to use
Yellow Tag - Scaffolding under modification (only scaffolders can work)
Red Tag - Do not work
General Safety Precautions
• Cold work permit is required.
• Non-sparking tools shall be used in hazardous area.
• All components of a scaffold, including the working platforms and planks, must be carefully inspected
before and after use.
• Job shall be suspended in case of heavy wind more than 65kmph and rain.
• Risk Assessment is required If Wind speed is More than 50kmph.
• Dismantling start from top.
• Scaffolding tag shall be renewed after one week and checklist shall be maintained.
• Ensure scaffolds are erected by a competent person and follow a tagging system.
• Loose materials, clamps shall not be kept unattended on working platform.
• Mobile Scaffold Casters (wheel) dia. should be 5inch 1(12.7cm) & Swivel lock Required
• Gin Wheel (pulley & rope) Should be use for light material lifting.
• Keep the scaffold level, and don't move the scaffold while anyone is standing on it.
