What is NGO?

 NGO is an organization consisting of private individuals who believe


in certain basic social principles/obligations and who structure their
activities to bring about development to communities that they are
servicing.

 NGOs include groups and institutions that are entirely or largely


independent of Government and that have primarily humanitarian
rather than commercial objectives.

o According to NGO-DARPAN, an initiative by NITI Aayog, there


are over 15,000 NGOs in India helping old age people.

1. VridhCare

 Founder: Dr. Shashi Khare.

 VridhCare is one of the leading non-profit organizations which


works towards the objective of serving the underprivileged
elderly community in the rural and urban areas.
 Aim: To create a society built on the grounds of equity and
equality wherein senior citizens feel valued and secured in every
way.

2. Dignity Foundation

 Founder : Sheilu Sreenivasan

 Year: 1995.

 A non-profit organization that enables senior citizens to lead


active lives and provides trusted information, productive ageing
opportunities and social support services
Work of Dignity Foundation

o They identify poor senior citizens living


in the slum communities of their six
impact cities (Bengaluru, Chennai,
Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune)
through needs analysis.
o They do not have the means to afford
two full meals a day. Hence, they go
their community and provide them with
ration kits that can last them and their
family up to one month.
o Dignity Helpline enables senior citizens to reach out for help and
assistance against abuse.
o On helpline number, they receive multiple distress calls regarding
elder abuse, disputes and discords. These calls are tackled on priority
and immediate help is made available to them.
o In order to stimulate and engage senior citizens from
underprivileged backgrounds with quality service, Dignity
Foundation runs Integrated Day Care Centres in Bengaluru,
Chennai and Mumbai.
o In order to stimulate senior citizens living with Dementia and
support caregivers, we operate two dedicated Dementia Day Care
Centres in Chennai and Mumbai. These are one-of-its-kind centres
where members receive tender loving care and affection.
o In order to reach out to the poor elderly patients with quality
service, Dignity Foundation has launched a mobile physiotherapy
van. It is a customized van, staffed with a licensed physiotherapist,
which caters to the eligible poor in Thane and nearby areas.
o Dignity Foundation’s Loneliness Mitigation Centres (LMCs)
provide various structured activities that help senior citizens with
social interactions, learning new skills and physical and spiritual
wellbeing.
o Dignity Chai Masti Centres provide a platform for
senior citizens to interact socially, build a support
network, boost their self-esteem and lead an active
life.

o Members are provided with the option to attend either


online only or hybrid i.e. physical and online sessions.

such as Doctors, financial experts, health
practitioners, photographers, legal advisors, etc.

 Founder: Ratan Tata

 General Manager: Shantanu Naidu

 Year: 2022
 In the age of increasing loneliness among the elderly, industrialist
Ratan Tata-backed Goodfellows is looking to build a bridge of
“intergenerational friendship.”

 The start-up brings together young graduates, assess for their


emotional intelligence and empathy, and seniors whose needs
may vary from a chat or a walk or even watching a movie to
being accompanied to a doctor or buying groceries, says its
founder Shantanu Naidu, General Manager at the office of Mr.
Tata. 
2. Manavlok

 Laid by Dr. Lohiya in 1962.

 Location: Ambajogai, Beed District

 With the aim to solve the socio-economic problems of the


community.

 Manavlok is the abbreviation for Marathwada Navnirman Lokayat


where, Navnirman means Creation and Lokayat denotes People’s
opinion.
