Tutorial
Answer (a)
(a) Draw a representative diagram of a power distribution system
Tutorial
Question (b),(c)
b) If the transformers (in the representative diagram) have efficiencies of 80%, for a
100kW power plant, and assuming an ideal cable for transmission, how much power
would reach the end user?
c) If the system (the representative diagram) has a 4:1 step-up and 1600:1 step down
transformers, and the power plant operates at 100kV, with a line resistance of 0.5
ohm per meter and a line length of 120km,

calculate the following:

i. Line Voltage

ii. End user voltage

iii. Power lost in line

iv. Power reaching the end user Explain any assumptions made.

Answer (b)
b) If the transformers (in the representative diagram) have efficiencies of 80%, for a
100kW power plant, and assuming an ideal cable for transmission,
how much power would reach the end user?

Input Power=100kW
Power after 1st transformer = 100kW × 0.8 = 80kW
Power after 2nd transformer =80kW × 0.8 = 64kW
Tutorial
Answer (c)
If the system (the representative diagram) has a 4:1 step-up and 1600:1 step down
transformers, and the power plant operates at 100kV, with a line resistance of 0.5 ohm
per meter and a line length of 120km,

calculate the following:

i. Line Voltage

Line voltage: 100kV × 4/1 = 400kV

Tutorial
Answer (c)
If the system (the representative diagram) has a 4:1 step-up and 1600:1 step down
transformers, and the power plant operates at 100kV, with a line resistance of 0.5 ohm
per meter and a line length of 120km,

calculate the following:

ii.End user voltage

End user voltage: 400kV × 1/1600 = 250V

This assumes that voltage remains constant across the distribution system and losses
appear in the current, in reality it will drop slightly since losses will affect voltage as well
Tutorial
Answer (c)
If the system (the representative diagram) has a 4:1 step-up and 1600:1 step down
transformers, and the power plant operates at 100kV, with a line resistance of 0.5 ohm
per meter and a line length of 120km,

calculate the following:

iii. Power lost in line

Power present after first transformer = 80kW

Therefore Current= 80kW/400kV = 0.2A
[P=IV] Resistance of line
= 0.5Ω × 120 = 60kΩ
Tutorial
Answer (c)
If the system (the representative diagram) has a 4:1 step-up and 1600:1 step down
transformers, and the power plant operates at 100kV, with a line resistance of 0.5 ohm
per meter and a line length of 120km,

calculate the following:

iv. Power reaching the end user Explain any assumptions made.

Power at end community = (80kW-2.4kW) × 0.8 = 62.08kW
