Unit 1 – Introduction

By: Dr. Charu V. Verma

Assistant Professor
Dept. of Computer Science & Engineering
2 Introduction - Machine Learning

 Subset of Artificial Intelligence

 First introduced by Arthur
Samuel in 1959.
 Definition
“Machine learning enables a machine
to automatically learn from data,
improve performance from
experiences, and predict things
without being explicitly programmed”

Dr. Charu V. Verma, Assistant Professor , CSE Dept. PIEMR, Indore, M.P.
3 Introduction - Machine Learning

4 Introduction - Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial= “Man Made”

Intelligence =”Thinking Ability”

AI mimics human intelligence.

What intelligence can do???????????

5 Introduction - Machine Learning

6 Definitions
 Machine Learning(ML) can be explained as automating and improving
the learning process of computers based on their experiences without
being actually programmed i.e. without any human assistance.
 ML is a system of computer algorithms that can learn from examples
through self-improvement without being explicitly coded by a
programmer.
 ML works on a simple concept understanding with experience
(Recommendation system on Ecommerce web site/ Facebook etc.)
 Primary aim of ML is to allow computer to learn automatically without
human intervention.

Scope of Machine Learning

 Education
 Health care sector
 Sales and Marketing (Digital Marketing)
 Scientific
 Search engine
 Spam detection
 Traffic alert
 Social media
 Ecommerce
 Space Exploration
 Etc…..

Limitation of Machine Learning

 Accuracy depends on training and learning which is not always available.

 Requires accurate details for prediction.
 Performance cannot be audited or guaranteed.
 A machine needs to have variation/ heterogenicity in dataset to learn
meaning insight.
 Lack of data leads to poor evaluation and prediction.
 Ethics
 Interpretability
 Misapplication
 Deterministic Problem
