Distance and Speed
Minah drove from City A to City B. In 1 hour, she travelled
63 km. Alan cycled in the same direction. In 1 hour, he
travelled 18 km.
Minah travelled Alan travelled
at a speed of at a speed of
63 km per hour. 18 km per hour.

The speed tells us how fast Minah and Alan were travelling.
We can write Minah’s speed as 63 km/h.
We read 63 km/h as 63 km per hour.
We can write Alan’s speed as 18 km/h.
We read 18 km/h as 18 km per hour.

Distance and Speed
A cruise ship travelled 148 km in 4 h. What was the speed of
the cruise ship in km/h?
Method 1
4 h  148 km To find the speed in km/h, we
1 h  148 ÷ 4 need to find the distance the
cruise ship travelled in one hour.
= 37 km
Method 2
Speed = Distance ÷ Time
= 148 ÷ 4
= 37 km/h

The speed of the cruise ship was 37 km/h.

Distance and Speed

Speed is the distance travelled per unit time.

It involves two quantities:
• Distance covered
• Time taken

Speed = Distance ÷ Time

The greater the distance travelled per unit time,

the faster the speed.

Let’s Try
Yiling ran 480 m in 3 min. Find Yiling’s speed in m/min.
Method 1
3 min  480 m
1 min  480 ÷ 3
= 160 m
Method 2
Distance = 480 m To find the speed, we need to
Time = 3 min know the distance covered
and the time taken.
Speed = Distance ÷ Time
= 480 ÷ 3
= 160 m/min

Yiling’s speed was 160 m/min.
