What is Organic farming?

Organic farming is agriculture that makes healthy food, healthy

soils, healthy plants, and healthy environments a priority, along
with crop productivity. Organic farmers use biological fertilizer il
so
inputs and management practices such as cover cropping and c
a ni
crop rotation to improve soil quality and build organic soil rg
matter. By increasing the amount of organic matter in the soil, O
organic farmers enhance the soil’s ability to absorb water,
reducing the impacts of drought and flooding. Improving soil
organic matter also helps it to absorb and store carbon and

e
re
other nutrients need to grow healthy crops, which, in turn, are

alf
better able to resist insects and diseases.

India’s first Organic state !

3
Organic farming in Sikkim
Sikkim is the first state in the world that is 100%
organic: All of its farmland is certified organic.
The policy implemented a phase-out of chemical
fertilizers and pesticides, and achieved a total
ban on sale and use of chemical pesticides in the
state. The transition has benefitted more than
66,000 farming families.
For their achievements, Sikkim’s
policies were awarded the Future
Policy Gold Award 2018, awarded by
the World Future Council in
partnership with the FAO and IFOAM –
Organics International.

Organic food

6
There is a widespread public belief that organic
food is safer, more nutritious, and better tasting
than conventional food, which has largely
contributed to the development of an organic
food culture. Consumers purchase organic
foods for different reasons, including concerns
about the effects of conventional farming
practices on the environment, human health,
and animal welfare.
7
There is no good evidence that organic food
tastes better than its non-organic

Some foods which are picked when unripe, such

as bananas, are cooled to prevent ripening while
they are shipped to market, and then are induced
to ripen quickly by exposing them to propylene or
ethylene, chemicals produced by plants to induce
their own ripening; as flavor and texture changes
during ripening, this process may affect those
qualities of the treated fruit

Is today’s organic food is really healthy

9
Why does organic food cost More ?

The cost of organic food is higher than that

of conventional food because the organic
price tag more closely reflects the true cost
of growing the food: substituting labor
and intensive management for chemicals.
These costs may include cleanup of
polluted water and remediation of
pesticide contamination.

Organic herbicide

• Baking soda
• Vinegar
• Table salt
• Newspaper ( smothering)
• Boiling water
• Flame and stream
• Oil
• Mulch
• Combination of ingredients
( baking soda – vinegar
Salt – oil, water – soap)

11
Baking soda kills weeds by
drawing water from the
plant cells, forcing the
foliage to dry off.To kill
weeds using baking soda,
mix it with water and a
surfactant and spray it on
weeds until they die off.

12
Using Acetic Acid as a Herbicide
Household vinegar works well on
young weeds. Repeated applications
improve its effectiveness. Spray it
directly on the leaves and try for total
saturation without too much run-off.
Don’t apply if rain is expected or
before watering, since water breaks
down acetic acid.
