WASTE

MATERIALS
Lesson 6
ESSENTIAL QUESTION
How can you make use of waste
materials?
Possible Answer
• Waste materials should be properly
disposed of.
• Practicing the 5R (Reducing, Reusing,
Recycling, Repairing, and Recovering)
technique can minimize waste and help
create a safe environment.
We will discover the following:
• What are two types of solid wastes?
• What are the 5R’s method of wastes
management?
• How can we manage our solid wastes at
home using 5R’s Method?
Which kind of future can you imagine?

Clean and prosperous Wasteland

Solid waste have two different
types:
• Biodegradable waste
• Nonbiodegradable waste
BIODEGRADABLE WASTE
It is a waste materials that can decay and be
decomposted.

• leftovers,
• vegetable cuttings
• and fruit peelings.
NONBIODEGRADABLE WASTE
It is a waste materials that do not decay or take a
very long time to decay

• plastics,
• metals
NONBIODEGRADABLE WASTE
It can be categorize into the following
Recyclables like Residual Hazardous wastes
like hospital and
plastics and can materials like factory wastes
rubber and textile
NONBIODEGRADABLE WASTE
Hazardous wastes like hospital
and factory wastes
It can contaminates the soil as
well as water
That is why, we do not simply
dispose of materials in just
one trash bin.
PRACTICING WASTE MANAGEMENT AT
HOME
Is the best
course of
action keep
our Reducing, Repairing, Recycling, Recover, Reusing
environment
clean.
REDUCE
It means to lessen the
amount of garbage
produced.

Reduce by using eco-bag.

REDUCE
Reduce by using metal
straws, spoon and fork
(instead of availing the
plastic utensils from fast
food restaurants
REDUCE
Reduce by bringing your
own water container
(instead of buying water
every now and then.
REUSE
It means using the
materials again for a
different purpose

Reusing plastic bottles

and containers for your
drink or food storage.
REUSE
Reminder

You can only reuse for a number of times depending

on what is indicated in the label.

If it exceeds the limits of reusing. You can still reuse

through our next waste management methods
RECYCLE
It means creating new products out of
waste materials.

This waste management method will

allow you to be a creative.
RECYCLE
What can you create out of
plastic spoon?
Maybe a flower design bowl
How about with water plastic
bottles?
It can be a flower pot just like
the given picture.
RECYCLE
How about the with plastic
straws?
Star lantern or parol

In this way, you were able to

reuse wastes by creating
something out of them.
RECOVER

It means getting back or converting waste to

another form of raw material that can be used
by product manufacturers.
RECOVER
If you cannot reduce, reuse,
and recycle at home just
dispose of your wastes
properly and make sure that it
goes to a material recover
facility.
RECOVER
This facility will sort out glass,
paper, bottles, and food
wastes into products such as
fertilizers and biofuels from
food wastes and newly-
shaped glass bottles for food
containers
REPAIR
It means restoring or
replacing a broken part of a
material
Just like a thorn, old
clothes, broken chairs, and
scratch papers, it does not
mean that you will have to
buy new ones
REPAIR
Torn clothes can be sewn

If your shirts and jeans

have holes in them you can
sew patches on them, this
will cover the holes and
serve as a design on your
clothing.
REPAIR
Check if the other scratch
Broken chairs can be

notebook.
Practice 5R’s Method of Waste
Management will lessen , if not totally
eliminate, the accumulation or piling
wastes in landfills. This will also prevent
flooding caused by waste materials that
clogged sewers and drainage.
Try searching for do-it-yourself craft ideas on the
internet, practice this method and surely our future will
be like this
