 Distance affects the performance of xDSL profoundly.

 Distance is not a problem for FTTH, as the maximum reach is more than 20 kms.
 FTTH supports all the available services.
FTTH TERMINOLOGIES

Optical Access Network (OAN)

The Optical Access Network is an access network towards the network side, it is also known as SNI (Service
Network Interface). Uplink ports of OLT connects with L2 Switch Ring of access network. All other in-between
components such as ODF/FDMS connected towards SNI comes under the Optical Access Network.

Optical Distribution Network (ODN)

In a PON Technology towards downstream side, all passive components from the PON Port of OLT to the PON
Port of ONT come under Optical Distribution Network. Normally, Splitter and ODF/FDMS come under this
category.

Optical Line Termination (OLT)

A Central Office (CO) equipment provides PON with the various network interfaces. One OLT serves multiple
ONTs through PON Downstream transmission, i.e., from OLT to ONT is usually TDM. Upstream traffic, i.e., from
ONT to OLT is usually TDMA. PON system may be either symmetrical or asymmetrical.

Optical Network Termination (ONT)/ Optical Network Unit (ONU)

An Optical Network Termination is a Customer Premises Equipment that provides user interfaces to the
customer.

FTTH PON ADVANTAGE

 High Speed, up to 2.5 Gbps in a fibre (OLT Port)

 Upto 32/64/128 customers in a single fibre. (Limited to 32 in case of BSNL OLTs), 320
to 640 customers per OLT.
 Symmetrical speeds (Suitable for video transmission like SKYPE or surveillance camera)
 Upto 1000 Mbps per customer
 Two phone numbers for voice using same ONT
 Multiple broadband connections using same ONT
 Covers long distance, upto 20 kms
 Since Splitters do not need power they can be placed any where between XGE(OLT) and
House(ONT)
 All BSNL services (Internet Leased Line, Point to Point Leased Line, MPLS VPN)
OLT

 Each OLT has multiple PON ports. In BSNL OLTs, this varies
from 10 to 20. OLTs with around 4/8 ports are used by LCOs.
(Local Cable Operators)

 Optical power output from each OLT port is split and sent to
multiple customer ONTs using Splitters.
Single Fiber Per Customer

PON uses Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM)

Technology to transmit and receive over a single fibre.
– Downstream Wavelength: 1490nm.
– Upstream Wavelength: 1310nm

Works upto 20KM distance between OLT and ONT.

Can go upto 60KMs if no splitters are used, ie only a single customer connected to a port.

BSNL Exchange

ONT

OLT
OLT-Cont’D

 BSNL OLTs allow 32 customers(ONTs) per port***. Others OLTs

allow 64 to 128 customers per port.

 So maximum 320 to 640 customers can be served from each

BSNL OLT.

 BSNL OLTs installed at our exchanges while LCO’s OLTs

installed at their premises
*** Limited by NOC as per OLT purchase conditions.

Splitters- Single Input and Multiple Outputs

Regional Telecom Training

centre,Trivandrum
Splitters
• Used to split optical power from a single fibre from the OLT port to multiple
customers

• 1:2, 1:4, 1:8, 1:16, 1:32 etc supplied by vendors as part of equipment.

• More splits means more customers per port.

• But higher splits causes higher power loss and hence the distance that can be
covered decreases.

• Splitters can be cascaded ie Output of a splitter can be connected to input of

another splitter.
ONT (Optical Network Terminal)

• The ONT (also called the modem) is installed at customers house. It connects to the Termination Point (TP) with
an optical fibre cable, and connects to your router via an LAN / Ethernet cable. It translates light signals from
the fibre optic line into electronic signals that your router can read.
ONT
Connectors

• Patchchords having SC (Square/ Subscriber) Connector at both

ends are used to connect Splitter and ONT.
ONT –Continued

BSNL ONTs have 4 Fast Ethernet Ports (upto 100Mbps) and two RJ11
(Landphone) Jacks.

It can support upto 4 Broadband connections and Two Voice Connections
simultaneously.

Customer has to purchase additional WIFI router for getting WIFI

connectivity.

Lower configuration ONTs are available in local market from prices starting
from Rs 900/-, but ONTs supplied by the vendor have to be used for best
results and so other ONTs are discouraged.

Security Points

 Most of the customer modems are not secured by default ,necessary

security measures has to be taken to harden these devices which will help
us in reducing the attack surface and providing better QOS to the
customer.

 All connections to be provided only after proper hardening of the device

like enabling the default firewall in the device, disabling the unwanted
ports like Telnet etc.
