I. Overview

• This chapter exposes you to the various forms of arts; the specific
roles of the artists and artisans; the different stakeholders in the
world of art and their respective functionalities as well. We must give
due credit to our very own national and Gawad sa Manlilikha ng
Bayan (GAMBA) artists’ indispensable contribution to our country.
Various Forms of Art, Viz., Visual,
Auditory and Combined Arts
* Traditional categories within the arts include literature (including poetry,
drama, story.
• Visual Arts (painting, drawing, sculpture, etc.)
• Graphic arts (painting, drawing, design and other forms expressed flat
surfaces)
• Plastic arts ( sculpture, modeling)
• Decorative arts (enamel work, furniture design, mosaic, etc.)
• Performing Arts (theatre, dance, music)
• Music ( as composition)
• Architecture (often including interior design)

Comparing Artists to Artisans
* Artists and Artisans fill different roles in the art sector. Artists
work in the fine arts including painting, illustration and sculpture while
artisans are craftsmen who work in textile, pottery, glass and television,
long and round tables, room doors, etc. Usually, these are manmade
shapes (Ragans, 2005).
Responsibilities of Artists and Artisans
*The job responsibilities of an artist include:
• Developing ideas for a canvas or product;
• Selecting a medium for a final work, including texture, size, or area;
• Collecting work for a portfolio and
• Applying for grants for financial support.
*The job responsibilities of an artisan include:

• Using and mixing mediums like paint, metal, glass, or fabric;


• Shaping, gluing, sewing, testing and producing products;
• Displaying work at various sites including auctions, craft shows or
online markets; and
• Estimating costs and material needs.

Main duties of an art dealer:
• Dealing- It is buying and selling of art masterpieces which involve
negotiating prices and delivery.
• Networking- It is the establishment of art collectors, gallerists, and
other potential clients; it is advising and working closely with clients.
• Searching- It is the spending ot time to look for the art masterpieces
from galleries and markets, by attending auctions or by negotiative to
other cities and other countries (IESA arts & culture).
Despite its diverse Nature performing arts management covers some

National Ang GAMABA Artists’ Notable
Works and Contributions
• The Philippine Congress passed Republic Act No. 7355 or also known
as Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan. (GAMABA) or the National Living
Treasures Award. The National Commission for culture and the Arts
GAMABA Committee and an Ad Hoc Panel of Experts, conducts the
search for the finest traditional artists of the land, adopts a program
that will ensure the transfer of their skills to others and undertakes
measures to promote a genuine appreciation of and instill pride among
our people about the genius of the Manlilikha ng Bayan (NCCA, 2020).
GAMABA AWARDEES
• Ginaw Bilog
- hails from Mansalay, Mindoro. He’s an expert in Ambalan
poetry. He made sure to spread it to his community in order to preserve
their culture specifically that Hanunoo Mangyan language.
• Masino Intaray
- a musician and storyteller who hails from Brookes Point,
Palawan. He accepted that award last 1993.
• Samon Sulaima
- is a Musician came from Mamasapano, Magindano. He excels in playing the
kutyapi. He was awarded last 1993.
• Lang Dulay
- is a T’boli textile dream weaver who hails from Lake Sebu, South Cotabato. She
relives the history of their tribe by means of weaving. She received the award last 1998.
• Salinta Monon
-is a Tagabawa Bagobo textile weaver who came from Bansalan, Davao del Sur. Sge
learned the art of weaving from her mother and soon perfected it.She shared knowledge to
her fellow Bagobo women so that their culture will be preserved. Just like Lang Dulay, she
obtained the award in the same year.
• Alonzo Saclag
- is a musician and dancer who comes from Lubuagan,
Kalinga. He got the award last 2000.
• Federico Caballero
- is an epic chanter from Calinog, Iloilo. He’s well-versed with
Sulod Bukidnon, one of the country’s indigenous languages. He got
the award last 2000.
• Uwang Ahadas
-is the musician in the Yakan Muslim tribe from Lamitan,
Basilan. He received the award last 2000.
• Darhata Sawabi
-is a Tausug textile weaver from Parang, Sulu. She continuously
teachers her mastery of weaving to other people in order to promote
their culture. She received tha award last 2004.
• Eduardo Mutuc
-is a proficient metalsmith from Apalit, Pampanga. He is a
specialist in religious and secular art. He was awarded last 2004.
• Haja Amina Appi
-is a mat weaver of the Sama tribe who’s from Tandubas, Tawi-
tawi. She is respected throughout her community for her unique
designs. She awarded last 2004.
• Teofilo Garcia
-is a casque who came from San Quintin, Abra. Teofilo is his own
endorser product that he is making- tabungaw. He received the award last 2012.
• Estila Bantilan
-is an expert mat weaver from Upper Lasang, Malapatan, Sarangani. Her
natural instinct and talent paved the way for her creativity in mat weaving. She
was awarded last 2016.
• Magdalena Gamayois
-an Ilocos textile weaver from Pinili, Ilocos Norte. Being self-taught, her
own dedication to share expertise has earned her an award last 2012.
• Ambalang Ausalin
-is a textile weaver who hails from Parangbasak, Lamitan City, Basilan.
She possesses the complex knowledge of the entire weaving process, aware at the
same time of the cultural significance of each textile design or category. She became
a recepient of the award last 2016.
• Yabing Masalin Dulo
-is an Ikat weaver from Landan, Polomolok, South Cotabato. Her ikat-
dyed fabrics with historical and cultural significance are sought after by people
from all the walks of life. She gained the award also in 2016.
