Mathematics 9 – Quarter 3

PREPARED BY:
ROGER TAPIA JR. 2
CLASS OBJECTIVES OF THE DAY

 Identify and describe ratio and proportion.

 Solve the missing part of the proportion.
 Apply/use the concept of means-extremes product
property to solve proportion.
 Practice patience and accuracy in solving ratio and
proportion.
 Display appreciation in doing the tasks.
WHAT’S IN
Can you recall how to identify
ratio?
Let us try!
Leon is helping his baby sister Daphne eat her
dinner. There are 12 peas left in Daphne's bowl and 7
peas squished in her hair. What is the ratio of peas in
Daphne's bowl to peas in her hair?
Answer:
12 : 7
WHAT’S IN
Can you recall how to identify
ratio?
Let us try!
For the perfect cup of hot cocoa, Eva uses 3 scoops
of hot cocoa mix, 10 miniature marshmallows, and 8
ounces of water. What is the ratio of scoops of hot
cocoa to miniature marshmallows?
Answer:
3 : 10

MINI-LESSON
When we talk about the speed of a car or an airplane we measure it in miles
per hour. This is called a rate and is a type of ratio. A ratio is a way to compare
two quantities by using division as in miles per hour where we compare miles
and hours.
A ratio can be written in three different ways and all are read as "the ratio of x to
y“.

A proportion on the other hand is an equation that says that two ratios are
equivalent. For instance, if one package of cookie mix results in 20 cookies than
that would be the same as to say that two packages will result in 40 cookies.

MINI-LESSON
Solving proportions is simply a matter of stating the ratios as
fractions, setting the two fractions equal to each other, cross-
multiplying, and solving the resulting equation. The exercise set
will probably start out by asking for the solutions to
straightforward simple proportions, but they might use the
"odds" notation, something like this:
Find the unknown value in the proportion:
2:x=3:
9.
MINI-LESSON
First step will be to convert the colon-based odds-
notation ratios to fractional form, so that you can get an
equation with two fractions:
MINI-LESSON
Then solve the proportion by cross-multiply, and then divide back off, Using
this
method, Always multiply across in the direction that has regular numbers on
either end. In this case, multiply the 2 and the 9 (going from the top-left to the
bottom-right), and then I'll divide by the 3 (going from the top-right around to
the bottom-left, where the variable is):
MINI-LESSON
A given proportion can be written into its equivalent form by
using one or more properties of Algebra. (Means-Extremes
Product Property/Cross Multiplication Property).

The product of the means equals the product of the extremes.

MINI-LESSON
Solved Example:
1. Find the fourth proportional of 3, 4 and 18.
MINI-LESSON
2. The numbers 8, x, 9 and 36 are in proportion. Find x.
