Two Types Of Nutrition

 Autotrophic Nutrition - “Autotrophic nutrition is a process where an organism

prepares its own food from a simple inorganic material like water, mineral salts and
carbon dioxide in the presence of sunlight.” The term “autotrophic” is formed by the
combination of two terms, “auto” meaning self, and “trophic” meaning nutrition.

 Heterotrophic Nutrition- Heterotrophic nutrition is the mode of nutrition where the

organism is unable to prepare its food and hence, depends upon plants or other
organisms for nutrition.
Types of heterotrophic nutrition

Types of heterotrophic nutrition-

 Holozoic Nutrition

 Saprophytic Nutrition

 Parasitic Nutrition
What is Holozoic Nutrition ?

1. It is the nutrition that occurs in the organisms that

intake solid or liquid food inside their body.
2. It involves the steps: ingestion, digestion, absorption,
assimilation, and egestion.
3. The process of nutrition in amoeba is holozoic
nutrition.
What is Saprophytic and Parasitic
Nutrition?
1. Saprophytic nutrition: The nutrition in which an organism
obtains its food from the dead and decaying organic matter of
plants and animals is called saprophytic nutrition. Example –
Fungi.
2. Parasitic nutrition: The nutrition in where an organism
(known as a parasite) lives on the body surface or inside the
body of another type of organism (known as a host).
