various 21st century literary genres and
the ones from the earlier genre/periods
citing their elements, structures and
traditions.
MOTIVATION:
• Each row/column will
write a 1 – line hugot of
the given picture.
• Afterwards, paste the
hugot line on the board
to form a stanza.
• Read the previous stanza
using appropriate
emotions and gestures

GENRES
(Awit, Riddles, Tanaga, Epigrams(Salawikain), Epic,
Folksongs(Awiting Bayan), Chants(Bulong)
AWIT
Uyayi or hele- a lullaby for putting a child to
sleep.
Soliranin- is a song for travelers.
Talindaw- is the seafarers’ song.
Kumintang- is a war song.
Maluway- is a song for collective labor
AWIT
Kundiman- is a melancholic love song
Dalit- is a song-ritual usually sung to the rhythm of dance.
Panambitan- is a courtship song.
Pamanhikan- is a song-ritual of the would-be bridegroom
to his would-be bride as he asks permission to marry her.
Subli- is another dance-ritual song of courtship and
marriage.
riddles
Tagalog riddles are called bugtong, while the
Ilocanos call these burburtia. Usually, riddles are
made to rhyme and utilize the talinghaga, a form
of metaphor whose signification eventually
conveys the meaning of the answer to the riddle.
These are made up of one or more measured lines
with rhyme and may consist of 12 to 18 syllables.
tanaga
is a compact seven-syllable quatrain consisting of four lines each
with same rhyme at the end of each line with and AABB rhyme
scheme.
Example:
Katitibay kang tulos
Sakaling datnan ng agos
Ako’y mumunting lumot
Sa iyo’y pupulupot.
Epigrams (Salawikain)-
These have been customarily used and served as
laws or rules on good behavior by our ancestors.
To others, these are like allegories or parables that
impart lessons for the young.
Example:
Aanhin pa ang damo, kung patay na ang kabayo.
