What is Mutation?
Any change in the DNA sequence
of a cell. Mutations may be
caused by mistakes during cell
division, or they may be caused
by exposure to DNA-damaging
agents in the environment.
What causes Mutation?
• Replication errors can causes mutations.

• Mutagens, such as UV ray and chemicals, can cause

mutations.

• Some cancer drugs use mutagenic properties to kill

cancer cells.
Are Mutation Helpful or Harmful?

Mutational effects can be beneficial,

harmful, or neutral, depending on their
context or location. Most non-neutral
mutations are deleterious. In general, the
baser pairs that are affected by a
mutation, the larger the effect of the
mutation, and the larger the mutation's
probability of being deleterious.
Types of Mutation

Spontaneous mutation Induced Mutation

They are mainly caused during They are caused by the changes in
DNA replication or by DNA brought about by some
incorporation of incorrect environmental factor called
nucleotide in the growing DNA mutagens.
chain.
Chromosome Mutation

May Involve:

● Changing the structure of a chromosome.

● The loss or gain of part of a chromosome.

Types:

● Deletion
● Inversion
● Translocation
● Nondisjunction
● Duplication
Gene Mutations
Genetic mutations are changes to your DNA
sequence that happen during cell division
when your cells make copies of themselves.
Your DNA tells your body how to form and
function. Genetic mutations could lead to
genetic conditions like cancer, or they could
help humans better adapt to their environment
over time.
