• It is a flexible or rigid device that is used to
protect and maintain the position of an
injured extremity.

Splinting
Reasons for splinting:
• Prevents motion of fractured fragments,
dislocated joint or damaged soft tissue,
thus reducing pain
• Minimizes complications.

Splinting
General rules for splinting:
• Splint before moving, unless patient’s life is in
immediate danger.
• All extremity injuries, regardless of their severity,
should be splinted prior to transport.
• If joint is involved, immobilize the bone above
and below the injury.
• Pad all splints to prevent local pressure.
