Intermolecular
Forces
Properties of liquids
are related to the
Intermolecular
Forces of
attraction in various
liquids.
♣ Properties of Liquids:
1) Liquid has a fixed volume but no
fixed shape.
2) Liquids can be slightly compressed.
large pressure is required to compress
them.
3) Liquids have lesser densities than
solids.
4) Intermolecular forces of attraction
is weaker than solids.
5) They have considerable space
between the particles.
Intermolecular forces - are the
nonbonding forces that attract individual
molecules to each other.
• They are typically much weaker than ionic,
covalent, or metallic bonds, but together they
are responsible for the condensed phases of
molecular compounds. In other words, if they
didn’t exist, every molecular compound
would be a gas at standard pressures and
temperatures.
