Principles
of
Design
BALANCE is the way the elements are arranged symmetrically or
asymmetrically to create a feeling of stability or impression of equality
in weight in an artwork.
Emphasis shows the focal point of an image or when one
area or thing stands out the most and gets a special attention.
Contrast has a large difference among different elements of
designs that create visual interest. It is a comparison of different
elements of design in order to highlight their differences.
Rhythm and movement is a repetition of elements that focuses
the eye of the viewers direct to the image that produce the look
and feel of movement.
HARMONY refers to the arrangement of elements that give the viewer
the feeling on how well all the visual elements work together as a
whole.
Unity.When all the elements and principles work
together to create a pleasing image
Variety is the use of different elements in an image that
has differences and change to increase the visual interest

Luzon
Inabel
Inabel is a handwoven fabric made by Ilocanos which is more
popularly known as “Abel Iloco”. It comes from the root word
“abel” which means “to weave”. The word Inabel of Ilocanos
literally means “woven”. It is created by skilled artisans using
traditional wooden looms. It comes with different patterns
inspired by nature. One of the most recognizable patterns of
Inabel is Binakol (also known as binakel, binakael, or binakul).
Binakol (meaning “twill”) can be easily recognized by its
interlocked geometric patterns which represent the waves of the
sea that protects people from malevolent spirits.
Kain is the basic dress for
women of Cordillera
region. It is a type of wrap-
around skirt (tapis in
Tagalog) characterized by
horizontal stripes bordered
by decorated panels along
the joins and edges, uses
bright colors especially
fiery red and embroidered
with beads and shells.
Some kain used other
colors like red, yellow,
white, black and green
which signify
the color of things in
nature.
Kadangyan is a burial cloth for the rich people of
Mountain Province. It is a Cordilleran term which
literally means “rich”. In earlier days, only the
grandmothers were allowed to weave burial cloths
(Kadangyan) but now, any able weaver is allowed to
weave burial cloths for the dead.
The handwoven fabrics of Bontoc are characterized by
different geometric shapes and different shapes of things
from nature. Siniwsiwan is the Bontoc’s blanket and
clothing wanes and lufid and ginaspala wanes.
Wanes and Lufid are
costumes of Igorots from
the
Mountain Province. Wanes
is a long strips of
handwoven loincloth
(bahag) for men and Lufid
is a wrap-around skirt
(tapis)
for women. These clothes
mirror the personality of
every Igorot and reflect
their culture and traditions
(ex: religious practices and
rituals).

Pahiyas means "decor". Every May 15, the fronts of
houses are elaborately decorated with brightly
colored rice wafer, called kiping, a type of rice dough
made from a traditional recipe.
When the festival is over, these kiping are cooked and
eaten as rice chips. Fruits, grain, vegetables, and
woven palm hats are used as decorations. In the
afternoon, San Isidro Labrador's image is carried
across town in a procession to assure farmers of
more bountiful harvests in forthcoming seasons.
HIGANTES FESTIVAL
Higantes Festival, also known as the Feast of San
Clemente, is celebrated every November 23 in the
town of Angono, Rizal. This is a major festival in
honor of San Clemente, the patron saint of
fishermen. His image is carried by male devotees
during a procession accompanied by "pahadores"
(devotees dressed in colorful local costumes or
fishermen's clothes, wearing wooden shoes and
carrying boat paddles, fish nets, traps, etc.) and
"higantes" (paper-mâché giants measuring 10-12
feet in height and 4-5 feet in diameter). This street
event ends in a procession to Laguna de Bay until
the image is brought back to its sanctuary.
THE BARONG TAGALOG
The Barong Tagalog has a long tradition of more
than four centuries.
The look as well as the meaning of the dress has
evolved throughout four centuries.
The special traditional features remained
untouched;
the dress is thin and transparent
(with a shirt under it),
has decoration and one will wear the barong
tagalog 'tucked out'.

HABLON
For the province of Iloilo, hablon-weaving
remains a cottage industry.
The art of weaving is passed on from one
generation to another.
Hablon is not just a provincial fabric.
There are different varieties from the
municipalities in Iloilo producing it.
With existing products such as pillowcases,
place mats, table runners, tote bags and wallet,
the fabric is now popularly used for elegant
evening gowns and even for stylish barongs.
PIYAYA
A Piyaya
is a pastry that traces it's roots
to the Southern part of the Philippines,
specifically in Bacolod,
Ilo-ilo and Cebu.
The filling is goo-ingly
sweet and savory at the same time,
and the pastry is flaky
and a delight to bite into.

KULINTANG
Kulintang is a modern term
for an ancient instrumental form
of music composed on a row
of small, horizontally-laid gongs that
function melodically, accompanied
by larger, suspended gongs and
drums.
MALONG
A malong in royal colours
as worn by Maranaw men and women of
royal status.
The materials are cotton
and silk (yellow).
The malong is decorated
with finely woven langkit.
THE TOROGAN
The Torogan is the ancestral house and
the royal residence of the upper-class
Maranao. It is commonly found in
Marawi City and other areas in Lanao del
Sur province. It is the dwelling place of
the datu along with his wives and
children. There could not be any house
larger than torogan of the datu within
the sultanate, for this signifies rank,
prestige and wealth.

2. Take a plain piece of paper (any size
but it must be square). Draw two

the small dots to the large dots.
