Seminar 1
Curriculum/Implementation
&
Lane Departure Systems
Meeting Guidelines
• Ask questions via the “Chat” as we go or wait until Q&A

• Please post your name, school and email in the “Chat” area

• This will not be a “Deep-dive”

• This is not intended to “Certify” anyone

• The PPT is in wide screen, you may need to adjust your Zoom windows to fit the

presentation screen, chat, and participant windows.

*Special Thanks to Steve Zack and Bosch for massive support

Agenda For This Session
• Locate the ADAS curriculum
– Outline, Tasks, Presentations, more…
• Recommended delivery sequence
• Tasks
• Sample presentation (Lane Departure Systems)
• Calibration example
• Laboratory Instructional Needs
• Q&A

Recommended Sequence
1. Start with the “1 Bosch ADAS Sensor Operation”
PPT.
– This will cover camera and sensor operation that is
applicable to all ADAS systems (generic).
– This area will likely need the most time so students can
understand how the cameras and sensors work.
– Product Data Sheets provide more detailed information.
*Focus should be on introduction and awareness,
not creating master diagnostic technicians.
Recommended Sequence
2. Introduction to Advanced Drivers Assistance Systems (ADAS)
PPT.
– Overview of what it is and links to introduction videos of systems.
3. Systems like Lane Departure, Active Cruise Control or Blind
Spot Detection provide solid starting points for the application
of the cameras and sensors.
Recommended Sequence
4. Each system will provide brief information on the following for
you:
– Overview
– Operation
– Components
– Diagnosis
– Service / Calibration
Tasks
• Eight generic tasks have
been created to provide a
foundation of laboratory
work. You can edit or
modify these as you like.
Brief Intro to Cameras
• A camera operates by collecting
light, passing it through a charged
couple device (CCD) that converts
the different colors to voltage. The
voltage is amplified and sent onto
a processor to convert to a digital
signal that is then interpreted and
utilized to make decisions
• White light “Blinds” the camera as
too many colors are present at the
same time
Brief Intro to Radar Sensors
• Active radar sends a
signal that bounces off
of an object and is
measured upon its
return.
• Based on that
information, distance
and location can be
determined.
Q &A
Lane Departure Systems
What Are Lane Departure Systems
What:
Systems designed to assist or warn driver when they are moving out of their marked lane

Why:
To improve passenger safety by providing warnings and / or intervention to potentially tired
or distracted drivers.

Benefits:
Decrease in accidents / injuries / deaths caused by tired or distracted drivers
Pathway to autonomous vehicles
Increased traffic flow

How:
Utilization of cameras and electronically controlled systems can interpret and react to
changing conditions faster than a human driver in many situations reacts. System can be
“Passive” (Provide audio, visual or haptic feedback) to notify driver of a pending situation or
can be “Active” (Intervention with steering) as the situation dictates.
Lane Departure System Operation
Camera(s) to see road stripes / markings
Some systems utilize only one camera, newer systems use two
To keep the vehicle centered in the lane (LC)
May have a “ping-pong” effect, weaving between the lines due to over corrections
Audio, visual, haptic warning(s) to driver
Notify driver when leaving lane (LDW)
Turn signal activation key operational factor
May have correction capability
Audio, visual, haptic warning(s) to driver
To keep the vehicle in the lane (LKA)
Has correction capability
Audio, visual, haptic warning(s) to driver
