MECHANICS :

1. The class will be divided into four groups.

2. Each group will be given materials (illustration
board and chalk).
3. Every member will help each other to find the
answer in the given function. The first group to
write and raise the correct answer will gain 5
points.
4. The group that will have the highest score will be
the winner.
2x +5

Question:
1. If 7 goes into the bag, what number comes
out?
2. If 13 goes into the bag, what number comes out?
3. If 3 goes into the bag, what number comes out?

ANSWER: 2(3) + 5 = 11

EVALUATING FUNCTION

OBJECTIVES :

Identify evaluation of functions.

Solve problems involving function.

Develops patience in evaluating functions.

Evaluating Function

is the process of determining the value of the

function at the number assigned to a given
variable. Just like in evaluating algebraic
expressions, to evaluate function you just need
to replace each letter in the expression the
assigned value and perform the operations in
the expression using the correct order of
operations.
EXAMPLE:1
Evaluate the function f (x) = 2 x + 1 if x = 1.5

f (x) = 2 x + 1 ; if x = 1.5
f (1.5) = 2 (1.5) + 1
f (1.5) = 3 + 1
f (1.5) = 4

The value of the function f (x) = 2 x + 1 if x = 1.5 is 4.

EXAMPLE:2

Evaluate y =

2.5

The value of y is 2.5

EXAMPLE:3

Evaluate the function f () = - 6 +26 if =

3

f () = - 6 +26
f () = - 6 +26 The value of the function f (x)
f () = 18-18+26 = - 6 +26 if x = 3 is 26.
f () = 26
APPLICATION:

Direction: Analyze and solve the given word problem by evaluating

the function.

Problem: Your group decided to sell snacks in the nearby

school. In one day, your groups spends Php 200 for rent
and Php 25 for each snack item you prepare. Your
expenses in a single day can be expressed as the function
C(X) = 25 x + 200, where x is the number of snacks
and C(x) is your daily expenses in pesos. How much is your
expenses if the group prepare 100 snacks? 150 snacks?
ASSESSMENT
Directions: On a one whole sheet of paper, answer the
following in 10 minutes.

A. Evaluate the given functions.

1. Let f(x)= √x-3. Find each function value.

a. f(3) b. f(4)
c. f(12)
2. Let f (x) = - 2x²+3x-1. Find each function value.
a. f(0) b. f (1) c. f(5)
ASSIGNMENT:
Direction: Copy the following. On your math notebook,
answer the given problem.

1. The math club goes to an amusement park. Student tickets cost $ 10

each. Teachers go for free. The bus costs $ 28 per day, which is
expressed as f (x) = 10 x +28. How much is the cost of 12 students
going in the amusement park?
2. Renting a canoe costs $10 plus $ 28 per day, which is expressed as f(x)=
28 x + 10. What is the total renting cost of canoe in 3 days?
