CLASSIFICATION OF CIRCUIT ELEMENTS

Active elements

Passive elements
ACTIVE ELEMENTS

An independent source which can deliver or absorb energy

continuously is called active element

Examples:

Voltage source, Current source, Generators, Transistors etc.

PASSIVE ELEMENTS
These elements either dissipate energy in the form of
heat or store energy.
Examples:
Resistor, Inductor and Capacitor.

VOLTAGE

Voltage, also called Electro Motive Force(EMF), is a

quantitative expression of the potential difference in charge
between two points in an electrical field.

 It is denoted by V and unit is Volts.

V = IR
CURRENT
Electric Current is the rate of flow of electrons in a
conductor.

The SI Unit of electric current is the Ampere.

It is denoted by I.

I = V/R
POWER
Electric power is the rate per unit time, at
which electrical energy is transferred by an electric circuit.
The SI unit of power is the watt.

It is denoted by P.

P = I2 R ;

P = VI ;

ENERGY
Electrical energy is the work done by the moving streams
of the electrons or charges.

Basic unit of the electrical energy is the joule.

It is denoted by E.
E= vit

 Inductor
RESISTOR
A resistor is an electrical component that limits or
regulates the flow of electrical current in a circuit.
Resistance is measured in ohms.
It is denoted by R.
 R=
V = Voltage
RESISTORS IN SERIES

Req = R1 + R2 + R3 + R4

RESISTORS IN PARALLEL

RESISTANCE
Resistance is the property of material which opposes the
flow of current in an electric circuit.
CAPACITOR
A capacitor is a element that stores the electric energy in
an electro static field. It is denoted by C.

It is a passive element with two terminals.

The SI unit of capacitance is the farad.

 C=
Q = Charge, V= Voltage Symbol
CAPACITANCE
Capacitance is the property of material which opposes
the sudden changes of voltage in an electric circuit.
INDUCTOR
An inductor, is a passive device that stores energy in a electro
magnetic field when electric current flows through it.
It is denoted by L
It is measured in henrys
L = ΦN/I

Φ = Magnetic flux
N = Number of turns
INDUCTANCE
Inductance is the property of material which opposes the
sudden changes of current in an electric circuit.
