Summary

• Study Object : Brock Commons

• Cross-Laminated Timber
• Specifications
• Protection and transport
• Regulation and construction
STUDY OBJECT :
BROCK COMMONS

• Student residence

• Location : The Point Grey Campus of the

University of British Columbia, Vancouver

• Materials : Wood, Concrete, Steel

CLT – Cross-Laminated Timber

• Solid wood construction product

• Cross-glued laminated panel board
• Used for most construction elements (walls,
roofs, stairs, etc.)

• Carbon stored in the wood:

1,753 metric tons of CO2
SPECIFICATIONS

• Manufacturing stages

PRODUCTION FORMATION PRESSING FINISHING

CLT – Cross-Laminated Timber

• The thickness : 60-300 mm; max : 500 mm

• Large panels : 3,5 or 7 folds
• Span : max 6-7 m
CLT – Cross-Laminated Timber

• Wood moisture content 12% (+/- 2%)

Vapor barrier
Rain barrier

EXTERNAL INTERNAL
CLT – Cross-Laminated Timber

• Thermal resistance of wood is greater than many other materials

• Less energy is required to heat and cool building with wood frames

7 times more than concrete

500 times more than steel

Protection and transport
Regulation and construction
French fire laws and
regulations for timber Constructive disposition
buildings over 50 m tall
French fire laws and
regulations for timber Manual trigger and alarm
buildings over 50 m tall

> Triggers must be positionned at each floor

next to the stairway
> Alarms sound must reach every appartment

CLT PANEL FLOORS

Prefabricated panel in factory
Treated to be water resistant
regarding the storage on the
building site and the whole life of
the building
Some details of
our timber topic

Prefabricated walls
•Steel panel
• Outside the
steel posts, 16mm weather resistant panels
applied outside these;

• Air and water resistant silicone-

liquid membrane applied to exterior
gypsum sheathing panels to act as semi-rigid
stone wool exterior sealant at high thermal
insulation and panel , applied on panel of

•Panel Siding CSA Approved High Pressure

Laminate, 70 Woodgrain

•Resin, applied to the insulation panel as a

finished coating.
Moisture protection on site of
timber components

•We can choose the best season to reduce the

impact of rain and the moisture present in the air
and erect the building quicker.

•Important to store the wood in the best condition,

minimize its outdoor time before construction it
must stay in a dry storage.

•When on construction site we must use some

cover.
Erection of the
component on site,
lifting, cranes, and
safety equipment

•The CLT floor panels were

conceive with lifting points so that
they could be erected like concrete
prefabricated panels.

•Regarding the safety of the

workers, they must wear harness
and classic safety equipment with
the high visibility jacket the hard
hat and the safety shoes. There are
also safety guardrail.

•The lifting is done by a 60 m tall

crane.
