Periodic trends in modern

periodic table
CREATED BY: SHIVANI SINGH
What is periodic trends?

 Periodic trends are specific patterns in the

properties of chemical elements that are revealed
in the periodic table of elements.
MAJOR PERIODIC TRENDS INCLUDE-
ELECTRONEGATIVITY
IONIZATION ENERGY

Periodic trends ELECTRON AFFINITY

ATOMIC RADIUS
METAALLIC CHARACTER
CHEMICAL REACTIVITY
Valency

 One of the important periodic trends is valency.

 The valency of an atom is its ability to combine with another atom.
 The no.of atoms in the outermost orbit is the valence electron that determine the valency
of an atom.
 We can simply determine the place of an element just by its valency
 Eg:metals in group one have valency 1
Ionization energy

 The ionization potential is the minimum amount of energy required to remove one
electron from each atom in mole of atoms in the gaseous state
 The first ionization energy required to remove the first electron.
 Trend wise ionization energy trends to increase while going from a period.
 Ionization energy and ionization potential are completely different.
Atomic size

 The distance between the nucleus and outermost orbit is called as atomic size.
 As we move in a period from left to right the atomic size of elements decrease.
 This happens due to increasing nuclear charge and electron.
 The atomic size increase while going from top to bottom in a group.
 This happens due to the increasing no.of shells in the atom
Electro negativity

 Electro negativity is the ability of an atom of any element to attract a shared pair of
electrons in a chemical bond.
 It is a measure of atoms tendency to form a molecule by attracting electrons to itself
 The most electronegative element is florine and the least is calcium
 Electronegativity increases from left to right in a period.
 It decreases from top to bottom in a group.
