CIRCLES
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN…
 Define, identify, and name the terms related
to the circle: radius, diameter, chord, center,
arc, and central angle.
 Identify congruent and concentric circles.

7
WHAT IS A CIRCLE?

A circle is the set of all points in a

plane at a given distance (radius)
from a given point (center) in the
plane.
8

A radius of a circle is a line
segment from the center to
any point of the circle.

9
A chord of a circle is a line
segment whose endpoints
lie on the circle.

Secant Line- It intersects the circle in
two points.

Tangent Line- It intersects the circle in

only one point.

14
ARC
It is two points on the circle and
the continuous part of the circle
between the two points.

15
SEMICIRCLE
It is an arc of a circle whose
endpoints are the points of the
diameter.

16
MINOR ARC
It is an arc of a circle that is
smaller than a semicircle.

17
MAJOR ARC
It is an arc of a circle that is
larger than a semicircle.

18
CENTRAL ANGLE
It is the angle with its vertex at the
center of the circle and whose sides
pass through the endpoints of the arc.

19
Refer to the figure below.

20
Congruent Circles
Two or more circles having
the same radius.

21
Concentric Circles
Two or more coplanar
circles sharing the same
center.
