1. DEFINITION
◦ COMPARE AND CONTRANS ESSAYS ARE MULTI-PARAGRAPH COMPOSITION THAT
EXPLAIN WAYS IN WHICH TWO (OR OCCASIONALLY MORE) SUBJECTS ARE SIMILAR AND
DIFFERENT. IN THESE EASSAY, COMPARE MEANS DESCRIBING SIMILARTIES BETWEEN
THE SUBJECT. THE ESSAY ON SMALL-TOWN LIFE VERSUS CITY WOULD PROVIDE AT
LEAST ONE PARAGRAPH ON HOW PEOPLE’S LIVES IN THE CITY ARE LIKE THE LIVES OF
THE PEOPLE THAT LIVE IN A SMALL TOWN. BASICALLY, THE COMPARISON TELLS WHAT
THEY HAVE IN COMMON.
2. CHARECTERISTIC
◦ A COMPARISON-CONTRAST PARAGRAPH HAS THRREE MAIN PART. THE TOPIC SENTENCE
INTRODUCES TWO SUBJECTS AND SAYS SOMETHING ABOUT THEM. THE BODY
SENTENCES GIVE DETAILS ABOUT HOW THE TWO SUBJECTS ARE ALIKE AND DIFFERENT.
THE ENDING SENTENCE SUMS UP HOW THE SUBJECTS ARE THE SAME OR DIFFERENT.
3. PURPOSE
◦ THE PURPOSE OF COMPARE/CONTRAS IN WRITING.
◦ THE KEY TO A GOOD COMPARE-AND-CONTRAS ESSAY IS TO CHOOSE TWO OR MORE
SUBJECTS THAT CONNECT IN A MEANINGFUL WAY THE PURPOSE OF CONDUCTING THE
COMPARASION OR CONTRAST IS NOT TO STATE. THE OBVIOUS BUT RATHER TWO
ILLUMINATE SUBTLE DIFFERENCES OR UNEXPECTED SIMILARITIES.

◦ THE COMPARE-AND-CONTRAST ESSAY STARTS WITH A THESIS THAT CLEARLY STATES
THE TWO SUBJECTS THAT ARE TO BE COMPARED, CONTRASTED, OR BOTH AND THE
REASON FOR DOING SO. THE THESIS COULD LEAN MORE TOWARD COMPARING,
CONTRASTING, OR BOTH. REMEMBER, THE POINT OF COMPARING AND CONTRASTING IS
TO PROVIDE USEFUL KNOWLEDGE TO THE READER. TAKE THE FOLLOWING THESIS AS
AN EXAMPLE THAT LEANS MORE TOWARD CONTRASTING:
THESIS STATEMENT: ORGANIC VEGETABLES MAY COST MORE THAN THOSE THAT ARE CONVETIONALLY
GROWN, BUT WHEN PUT TO THE TEST, THEY ARE DEFINITELY WORTH EVERY EXTRA PENNY.
HERE THE THESIS SETS UP THE TWO SUBJECTS TO BE COMPARED AND CONTRASTED
(ORGANIC VERSUS CONVENTIONALVEGETABLES), AND IT MAKES A CLAIM ABOUT THE
RESULTS THAT MIGHT PROVE USEFUL TO THE READER.

SUBTLE DIFFERENCES. FOR EXAMPLE, RED DELICIOS APPLES ARE SWEET, WHILE
GRANNY SMITHS ARE TART AND ACIDIC.
o Compare and contras essays are academic papers in wich a student analyses two or more subjects
with each other. To compare means to explore similarties between subjects while to contras means
to look at their differences. Both subject of the comparison are usully in the same category, although
they have their differences. For example, it can be two movies, two universities, two cars etc.
o For example:
o Choose a topic from the field of your interests. Otherwise your risk failing your paper. It’s a good
idea to choose a topic based upon the class subject or specialist subject. (unless the requierement say
otherwise.)
o Analyze each argument carefuly. Include every detail for each opposing idea without doing so, you
can definitely lower graders.
