Learning Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

 Illustrate one-to-one functions confidently

 Distinguish real-life situations represented by one-
to-one functions with ease.
 Perform horizontal line test with 98% confidence.
Function
• A type of relation where there is exactly
one output for every input. For every x
there is exactly one y.
• The four representations of functions
include: ordered pairs, mapping,
equation, and graph.
Definition.
The function is one-to-one if for any x1,
x2 in the domain of f, then . That is, the
same -value is never paired with two
different -values. In other words, one-to-
one functions must not have repeated -
values.
Relationship of One-to-one and
Function

• In order to have a one-to-one, a

relation must be function
Figure 1. One-to-one function Figure 2. Not a one-to-one function
Example 1:

{ ( − 2 , 6 ) , ( −1 ,3 ) , ( 0 , 2 ) , ( 1 , 5 ) }
One-to-one
Example 2:

Not one-to-one
Example 3:

𝑓 ( 𝑥 )=2 𝑥 − 5

One-to-one
Example 4:
2
𝑓 ( 𝑥 ) =𝑥 +3

Not one-to-one
Example 5:

The relation pairing an SSS member to his or her SSS number

Solution:
Each SSS member is assigned to a unique SSS
number. Thus, the relation is a function. Further,
two different members cannot be assigned the
same SSS number. Thus, the function is one-to-
one.
Example 6:
The relation pairing a real number to its square .
Solution:
Each real number has a unique perfect square.
Thus, the relation is a function. However, two
different real numbers such as 2 and –2 may
have the same square. Thus, the function is not
one-to-one.
Example 7:
The relation pairing an airport to its airport code
Solution:
Since each airport has a unique airport code, then
the relation is a function. Also, since no two
airports share the same airport code, then the
function is one-to-one.
Example 8:
The relation pairing a person to his or her citizenshi

Solution:
Since each airport has a unique airport code, then
the relation is a function. Also, since no two
airports share the same airport code, then the
function is one-to-one.
Graph of a One-to-one Function
Horizontal line test - A function is one-to-one if each horizontal
line does not intersect the graph at more than one point
Example 7:

This graph is a function and since

every horizontal line intersects this
graph in at no more than one point,
this is a one-to-one function.
Example 8:

The graph is a function but since the

horizontal line intersects this graph at
infinitely many points, this is not a
one-to-one function
Example 9:

The graph is not a function;

therefore, it is not one-to-one. Also,
using the horizontal line test, the
graph intersects at more than one
point.
