DEFINITION AND
BACKGROUND
• Narrative design collects stories from individuals (documents and group conversations)
about individuals' lived and told experiences. The story is co-constructed between the
researcher and the participants, and it is intended as a performance to convey some
message or point (Riessman, 2008).
• Narrative stories are analyzed in varied ways. An analysis can be made about what was
said (thematically), the nature of the telling of the story (structural), or who the story is
directed toward (dialogic/performance) (Riessman, 2008).
• Webster and Metrova (2007), narrative is a research method in the social sciences. So,
narrative research is defined as the study of stories that tell and explain an event that is
the focus of the researcher's attention based on a certain time sequence in detail.
• Narrative research means researchers describe individual lives, collect stories about
people's lives, and write down stories of individual experiences (Clandinin, 2007).
