So, what is Material Self?

"Material self sum total of all he call his, not only his body
psychic powers, but his clothes and his house, his wife and
children." -William James
We are what we have.
COMPOSITION OF MATERIAL
SELF
Material Self refers to our
body, as well as the tangible
HOME objects, places, things that
IMMEDIATE we describe as My or Mine.

• Inner most part of our material self

• Intentionally, we invest in our body.

• We strive to make sure that this body


functions well and good.
CLOTHES
• The style and the brand of clothes becomes a symbolic
significance.
• The fabric and style of the clothes we wear bring sensations to the body
and can affect our attitude and behaviour.

• The material component of the self can include books, bed, money, car,
house and other things that person can call his own possession.

• Clothing is a form of self expression.

• We choose and wear clothes that reflect our self.


IMMEDIATE
FAMILY
• These people is likely to share and influence the development of self
identity.
•Our siblings and parents hold a great important part of our self.

• What they do or become affects us.

• When an immediate family member dies, part of our self dies.

• When their lives are in success, we feel victorious as if we are the


one holding the trophy.
HOME "Home is where the heart is"
• If it's earliest nest of our selfhood.

• Our experience inside the home were recorded


and marked ion particular parts and things in
our home.

• Just like the saving "if only walls can speak".

TWO SUBCLASSES OF THE MATERIAL
SELF:
1. THE BODILY SELF
The components of this is composed of the intimate parts of theperson, it includes
our body’s aspects such as physical (arms head, legs etc),emotional (feelings,
desires etc), psychological (intelligence, cognition etc) and moral(values, beliefs
etc).

2. THE EXTRACORPOREAL SELF.


Also known as the extended self. It includes the people ofgreat significance to us
(family), possessions (house, car, clothes), places that matter to us, products of our
labor (job, handworks etc).
• Material Possessions can be a reflection of
hard work and success.

• People tend to measure success through


material possessions.

• Material Possessions can make people more


motivated to work harder to achieve them.

• The negative effect of the strong desire for material

• Someone with a high level of materialism
• Excessively concerned with the acquisition of material
possessions.
COMPULSIVE BUYING
DISORDER (CBD)
The psychological dysfunction or impairment in functioning
caused by strong desire of material possession.

Characterized by an obsession with shopping and buying


Behaviours that causes adverse consequences (e.g..,debts).
Psychologist are identifying social and cultural factors that seems
strongly implicated in the etiology of materialism.
