-ed sound in regular verbs


What are voiced and voiceless sounds?

■ -ED endings have different sounds according to the vocal quality of the last syllable in
the verb.
■ It’s important to know when a verb ends in voiced or voiceless sound, because it is
going to help you pronounce the –ed sound correctly.
■ Voiced sounds are the ones you produce by using your vocal folds (your throat).
■ Voiceless sounds are the ones you produce without using your vocal folds (your
throat), only using air and your mouth.
■ Too identify voiced and voiceless, we have to pay attention to our throat vibration
– Vibration: voiced sound
– No Vibration: voiceless sound
Kinds of sounds

Voiced: with throat vibration

Voiceless: no throat vibration

Fricatives: you blow a little amount of air

Stops: you explode a little amount of air


-ED sounds

■ The termination –ed changes pronunciation if the verb ends in voiced or voiceless
sound.
■ There are three possible pronunciations for –ed:
– /t/: verb ending in voiceless sound;
■ Work, help, watch
– /d/: verb ending in voiced sound;
■ Move, use, play,
– /id/: verb endin in /t/ or /d/;
■ Need, want, pant
