Chemical Reaction

Chemical reaction, a process in which one or more

substances, the reactants, are converted to one or more
different substances, the products. Substances are either
chemical elements or compounds. A chemical reaction
rearranges the constituent atoms of the reactants to
create different substances as products.

Chemical Equation

Chemical equations make use of symbols to represent

factors such as the direction of the reaction and the
physical states of the reacting entities. Chemical equations
were first formulated by the French chemist Jean Beguin in
the year 1615.

Steps For Balancing
Equations
Steps For Balancing Equations
1. Identify Reactants and Products

Write down the chemical equation with the reactants on

the left and the products on the right.

2. Count Atoms
Count the number of each type of atom on both sides of
the equation.

3. Balance the Most Complex Compound First

Start by balancing elements that appear in only one

reactant and one product.
Steps For Balancing Equations
4. Adjust Using Coefficients

Place coefficients in front of compounds to balance the equation. Do

not change subscripts.
5. Check and Fine-Tune

Double-check that all atoms are balanced.

6. Reducing Coefficients

If possible, simplify coefficients by finding the greatest common factor.

7. Recheck for Balance

Ensure that the equation is still balanced after making any

adjustments.
1. The substances undergoing reaction are called
reactants, and their formulas are placed on the
left side of the equation.

2. The substances generated by the reaction are

called products, and their formulas are placed
on the right side of the equation.

3. Plus signs (+) separate individual reactant and

product formulas, and an arrow (⟶) separates
the reactant and product (left and right) sides of
the equation.

4. The relative numbers of reactant and product

species are represented by coefficients
(numbers placed immediately to the left of each
formula). A coefficient of 1 is typically omitted.
