Simple Future Tense

• There is only one use of this tense.

1. The action which is going to happen in the future.
• S.F. = SUB + WILL/SHALL + V1 + OBJ
• here SHALL word is used with I and WE that is 1st person
singular and plural.
• Here SHALL word is also used in formal language.
• Formal language means when we are speaking to our
superiors.
• I shall complete my homework tomorrow.
• WILL word can be used with any subjects like I, WE, YOU, HE,
SHE, IT, THEY
• I will do my homework tomorrow.
• Words like TOMORROW, THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW are the
indicators of this tense.
• Infinitives
• That means we can write simple future tense in two other ways.
• First is “TO BE GOING TO”
• To be = IS/AM/ARE WAS/WERE
• Let’s understand this with examples
• I am going to do my homework tomorrow.
• He is going to do his homework tomorrow.
• We are going to our homework tomorrow.
• Here all three sentences are indicating that action will be happened in future
tense.
• Remember that we have to put V1 after word GOING TO….you can clearly see in
the examples that I have put V1 after going to.
• Now next examples of WAS/WERE
• I was going to play cricket
• We were going to play cricket.
• That means in the past we were about to do the action.
• I was going to finish my homework yesterday.
• Here again we have to put V1 after GOING TO.
• That means action of finishing homework was about to be done yesterday but it
• Second is “TO BE TO”
• Again here TO BE means IS/AM/ARE WAS/WERE
• Let’s understand with examples
• I am to finish my homework tomorrow.
• We are to finish our homework tomorrow.
• He is to finish his homework tomorrow.
• Meaning is same as ‘TO BE GOING TO”
• Remember here again we have to put V1 after word TO.
• Now next examples of WAS/WERE
• I was to finish my homework yesterday.
• We were to finish our homework last night.
• Here again meaning is same as “TO BE GOING TO”
• Here again we have to put V1 after word TO.
• Negative Sentence
• We have to just put NOT after WILL/SHALL
• We will not go there.
• I shall not do my homework today.

sentence.

• Homework will be done by him tomorrow.
• I shall be given salary tomorrow.
• Homework IS GOING TO BE DONE by him.
• I AM GOING TO BE GIVEN salary tomorrow.
• Homework IS TO BE FINISHED tomorrow.
• Here in the passive voice of infinitives we have to

time at the end of sentences.

Perfect Future Tense
• This tense is quit tricky.
• Try to understand it carefully.
• It has one use.
1. It is used for the action which will be completed in the future before another action in the
future.
• S.F. = SUB + WILL + HAVE + V3 + OBJ
• The party will have finished before you arrive.
• See, here both the action will happen in the future but the first party will get finished that is
why it is in perfect future tense and then next action of arrival will occur.
• Remember that we cannot write perfect future tense alone. In simple words, there must be
some other action that must be happened in the future.
• For example = I cannot write like sentence like “ The party will have ended”….this is completely
wrong.
• In short, if the two action will occur in the future, the first one we have to write in perfect future
tense.
• FROM NOW, BEFORE, WHEN are some of the indicators of this tense.
