Circles

"A circle is the reflection of eternity. It has no beginning, and it has no end."
What is a Circle?
What is a Circle?
Circle: the set of all points that are equidistant (equally distanced)
from a single point called the origin (center)
• There are an infinite number of points around a circle

Origin: the center of a circle

The Radius of a Circle
Radius: the distance from the center of a circle to any other point on
the perimeter (circumference) of that circle

The formula to find the radius is radius = diameter ÷ 2

r = d/2
The Diameter of a Circle
Diameter: the distance across a circle that touches two points on the perimeter
(circumference) of that circle

The diameter is really the same as two radius lines drawn in opposite directions;
thus, the diameter is always twice as long as the radius

The formula to find the diameter of a circle is diameter = 2 x radius

d = 2r
The Circumference of a Circle
Circumference: the perimeter of a circle (the distance around a circle)
What is Pi?
Pi (π): the ratio (a relationship between two numbers that's written
like a fraction) of two different distances on a circle

π is the ratio between the distance around a circle / distance across a

circle

Basically, π is circumference
diameter
The Value of Pi
Since π is a ratio, it is the same number for every circle (no matter
how big or small)
• This is because Pi represents how many diameters it takes to wrap around
a circle

The value of π = 3.14 …

• Since Pi is an irrational number, the decimal digits that follow never end
and never repeat
• Therefore, it takes approximately 3.14 diameters to wrap around the full
perimeter of a circle
Calculating the Circumference and Area of Circles
Calculating the Circumference of a Circle
To find the circumference of a circle, simply multiply Pi by the
diameter of the circle

c=πxd

Practice: find the circumference of a circle with a diameter of 10 cm

Calculating the Area of a Circle
To find the area of a circle, simply multiply Pi by the radius squared

A = π x r2

Remember, r2 is not the same as 2 x r

Practice: find the area of a circle with a diameter of 10 cm
