What is speech context
and what are the types of
speech context ?
A “Speech Context” refers to the environment in which

communication occurs. While the focus of studies in the field

of communication remained largely on public communication

in the past, the discipline has developed interest in studying the

various types of communication or speech contexts.


THERE ARE 4 DIFFERENT
TYPES OF SPEECH CONTEXT

 Interpersonal
 Intrapersonal
 Public
 Mass communication
INTERPERSONAL
 This type of communication happens between
one or more, but not more than 12 people.

 EXAMPLE: talking to your friend/s


2 TYPES OF INTERPERSONAL
COMMUNICATION

 Dyad – is a type of interpersonal


communication that only involves 2
people.
 Small group – is a type of interpersonal
communication that happens within 3 or
more people, but not more than 12
people.
INTRAPERSONAL

Intrapersonal communication contrasts


with interpersonal communication, in
which several people are involved.

EXAMPLE: thinking, and self-reflection


PUBLIC
 You deliver a message to a bigger number people
in a venue.

 EXAMPLE: public speaking, MC


MASS COMMUNICATION
 Imparting or exchanging of information
on a large scale to a wide range of
people.

 EXAMPLE: TV broadcasting, weather


report, and advertisement
