JOSE RIZAL
Jose Rizal came from a wealthy family in Calamba,
Laguna, Considered one of the largest families in those
times, the 13-member-family consisted of his father
Francisco Mercado II, his mother Teodora Alonso
Realonda, himself, nine sisters and one brother.

The Rizal paternal ascendant was Domingo
Lam-co, a full-blooded Chinese who lived in
Amoy, China and arrived in the Philippines in
the closing years of the 17th century.
Domingo Lam-co was married to a Chinese
half-breed named Ines de la Rosa. The
Mercado-Rizal family had also Japanese,
Spanish, Malay and Negrito blood aside
from their Chinese blood.

FRANCISCO “Kikoy” ENGRACIO
MECADO y ALEJANDRO (1818-1898)

> Jose Rizal’s father Francisco was the youngest of 13


children of Juan and Cirila Mercado. He was born in
Binan, Laguna, studied in San Jose College of Manila
and died in Manila.
> Jose Rizal inherited from his father some qualities
such as being hardworking, string willed,
independent minded and with a valiant spirit.

TEODORA “ Lolay” MORALES
ALONSO REALONDA y QUINTOS
(1826-1911)
< Teodora, the mother of Jose Rizal, was a business-
minded, religious and hard working individual who was
born in Santa Cruz, Manila on November 14, 1827. She
was the second child of Brijida de Quintos and Lorenzo
Alonso. Teodora had Spanish and Japanese ancestors while
the father of Teodora was a half Spaniard engineer known
as Lorenzo Alberto Alonzo. She studied at the Colegio de
Santa Rosa. Teodora died in Manila in 1913.
< she was his first teacher, that she managed the family
various agricultural business, she thought him virtues like
thrift and perseverance.
< she was thr main character in a life- changing event in
her son’s.

SIBLING’S
SATURNINA RIZAL MERCADO de
HIDALGO “Neneng” (1850-1913)

< Eldest child of the Rizal-Alonzo marriage. Married


Manuel Timoteo Hidalgo of Tanauan, Batangas.
< Second Mother – she and ger mither provided the little
jose with good basic education that by the age of three,
Pepe already knew his alphabet.
< Most welcoming- Rizal’s studies in Europe were finaced
in part by Narcisa, who pawned her jewelry and sold her
clothes.

PACIANO RIZAL “Lolo Ciano”
(1851-1930)

< only brother of Jose Rizal and the second child. Studied
at San Jose College in Manila; became a farmer and later a
general of the Philippine Revolution. He later married
Severina Dacena and had two childreeen and died early
age. Paciano passed away in 1930.
< He served as Rizal’s guardian while the latter was
studying Spain.
< He would constantly send money to Spain and update
his younger brother of the friars abuses in the Philippines
through letters.

NARCISA RIZAL “Sisa” (1852-1939)

< The third child. married Antonio Lopez at Morong, Rizal;


a teacher and musician. She was married to Antonio
Lopez. She was a witness to the secret pact between Jose
and Paciano.
< It was Narcisa who was diligent about visting Rizal
when he was imprisoned.
< She said “ she was likened to a second mother”.

OLYMPIA RIZAL “Ypia” (1855-
1887)

< The fourth child. Married Silvestre Ubaldo; died in 1887


from childbirth. A telegraph operator from Manila.
< Rizal confided to Olympia served as the mediator
willingly served as the mediator between the two teenage
lovers.

LUCIA RIZAL “Lucing” (1857-1919)

<The fifth child. Married Matriano Herbosa.


< in 1889 Mariona died due to a epidemic but was denied a
Christian Burial. This was duento the fact that he was the
brother in law of Jose Rizal. This showed the beginning of
the persecution of the Rizal family by Spanish friars. Lucia
died in 1919.
< As a tribute to her death of her husband, Jose published
an article in La Solidiridad Una Profanancion ( A
Profanation) attacking the friars for not granting him a
Catholic burial.

MARIA RIZAL “ Biang” (1859-1945)

<The sixth child. Married Daniel Faustino Cruz of Biñan,


Laguna.
< Mauricio Cruz, one of the children become a student of
Jose Rizal in Dapitan and was known to be one of his
uncle’s favorites. Maria was a known recipient of many od
Jose letters during his lifetime. Maria died in 1945.

JOSE RIZAL “Pepe / Moy” (1861-
1896)

<The second son and the seventh child. He was executed


by the Spaniards on December 30,1896.
< was married to Josephine Breacken and bore a son
named Francisco was name after his father but died few
hours after his birth.

CONCEPCION RIZAL “ Concha”
(1862-1865)

<The eight child. Died at the age of three.


< Jose’s first sorrow as he mentioned in his diary, the first
shed tears cause by love and grief.

JOSEFA RIZAL “ Panggoy” (1865-
1945)

<The ninth child. An epileptic, died a spinster.


< She breaks both stereotypes pf woman and handicap,
and was elected as the president of the Katipunan’s
Women Chapter, where she took on the appellation “
Sumikat”.

TRINIDAD RIZAL “Trining” (1868-
1951)

<The tenth child. Died a spinster and the last of the family
to die.
< Jose gave her the alcohol lamp where he hid his untitled
poem now known as the Mi Ultimo Adios ( My Last
Farewell)

SOLEDAD RIZAL “Choleng” (1870-
1929)

<The youngest child married Pantaleon Quintero.


< Being a teacher, she was arguably the best educated
among Rizal’s sisters.

< Domingo Lam-Co, the family root, arrived from
Amoy, China in 1660s and changed his name to
Mercado in 1697. He married late in life.
< Francisco Mercado y Chinco, the first son of
Domingo Lam-co.
< Juan Mercado y Monica, youngest son of Francisco
Mercado y Chinco, a captain in the Spanish army
< Petrona, Potenciana and Francisco Mercado, Sr.,
children of Juan Mercado. The youngest Francisco
Mercado, Sr. was the father of Jose Rizal, Francisco

Jose’s relatives who influenced him greatly mostly consisted
of his mother’s brothers: Tio Jose, Tio Manuel, and Tio
Gregorio.
Tio Jose - He is the youngest among the siblings of Teodora,
and was schooled in Calcutta, India. He was Jose Rizal’s
inspiration as he sketches and paints. Tio Jose encouraged
him to engage in sculpturing.
Tio Manuel - Known to be big and strong, he influenced Jose
to visit the outdoors, do long walks with his pet black dog,
Usman, and even go horseback riding with his horse,
castaño.
Tio Gregorio - Through his Tio Gregorio, Jose learned the
value of hard work, careful observation of life, as well as
independent thinking. Through him, Jose likewise became
