TEST METHOD TRAINING PROJECT

Overview

The purpose of this test is to determine the degree of colorfastness

and solvent resistant ability of footwear upper materials, plastic parts
and decorative coatings when exposed to solvents.

Sample Size

The minimum sample size for solvent wicking is 12, 3

samples/material.

Set-Up and Adjustment of Test Equipment

1. Cut 3 sets of 4 swatches (approximately 2.54 cm x 2.54 cm)

of each material.
2. Place each swatch in the middle of a white strips. The
material to be tested should be contacting the face of the
test strip materials.
3. Staple one swatch to each of the 4 types of the test strips
( Polyester , Nylon , Leather, & Synthetic Leather).
4. Soak all samples (one by one) on MEK for 20 second.
5. Hanging the test strips on air circulate fume hood.
6. Let it dry.

5
Data Collection and Analysis

 After taking out the staples from the tested sample, examine the white
test strips for color staining due to color transfer from the swatch.
 Identify the worst color staining area on the white strips (either form
face or back side) for staining evaluation
 Score the test materials
5.0 No color transfer
4.5 Very little color transfer
4.0 Slight color transfer
3.5 Moderate color transfer
3.0 Definite color transfer
2.5 Significant color transfer
2.0 Strong color transfer
1.5 Very large color transfer
1.0 Complete color transfer
 Report the score for each material on each test strip (Polyester Textile,
Nylon Textile, Leather, & Synthetic Leather).
