❏ Table 1 outlines the socio-demographic profile of 10


smallholder pig farmers in Canila, Biliran. Results showed
that, farmers aged ranged from 29-66 years old. The
majority (40.00%) fall within the 41-50 age range, with the
mean age being 47 years.

❏ The gender distribution of the 10 farmers indicates 7


(70.00%) female pig raisers, with 7 (70.00%) being married.
Around 5 (50.00%) completed secondary education.
Employment-wise, 6 (60.00%) are self-employed, 1
(10.00%) is employed, and 3 (30.00%) are unemployed.

❏ The majority of the farmer’s (70.00%) have a monthly


income of less than 5,000 pesos. Most farmers (50%) have a
5 years above of pig-raising experience, implying additional
non-farm income in Canila, Biliran

❏ Displayed in Figure 3 are the ownership patterns among


small-scale pig raisers in Brgy. Canila, Biliran, Biliran. The
data reveals that 9 among the 10 respondents exclusively own
their farms, while only 1 pig raiser have a partial ownership.

Land Ownership of the Smallholder Pig Farmers

❏ Illustrated in Figure 4 is the land ownership distribution


among 10 pig raisers in Brgy. Canila, Biliran, Biliran. The data
indicates that a majority of respondents of 6 farmers own the
land, while 3 farmers are tenants and no farmer has rented
land.

Land Area of Pig Farmers

❏ Figure 5 illustrates the land ownership distribution among 10


pig farmers in Brgy. Canila, Biliran, Biliran. The data reveals
that a significant majority (7) of respondents possess land
areas ranging from 100 to 500m², followed by those owning
500-1,000m² (2), 1,000m² to 2ha (1), and zero count of
farmer that has a 2 ha. above land. Furthermore, pig farmers
with larger land holdings engage in crop production to
augment their income and provide feed for their livestock.

Production Scheme Adopted of Pig Farmers

❏ Figure 6 shows that the 10 respondents in Brgy.Canila,


Biliran,Biliran, opted for fattening, while 2 of the 10 pig
farmers also embraced weaning, and no farmer has practiced
breeding. The majority of the 10 pig raisers in Canila, Biliran
engage in fatttening for meat purposes.

Number of Pig Raised of Pig Farmers

❏ Figure 7 shows the number of pigs raised of pig farmers in


Brgy. Canila, Biliran, Biliran. It was revealed that 9 of the 10
respondents raised ranging from one to ten number of pigs,
while 1 farmer has raised between 31-40 pigs. No farmer has
raised in the ranges of 11-20 and 21- 30 pigs.

Type of Pig Raised

❏ The total number of pigs raised 0f the 10 small holder pig


raisers in Brgy. Canila, Biliran, Biliran are shown in figure 8.
Data shows that the 10 respondents included in the survey
raised 30 piglets followed by sow with a total number of 12
sows and 40 fatteners, while, no boars were raised.

Swine Classification
The Source of Pig

❏ Figure 9 illustrates the origin of pigs of the 10 respondents in


Brgy. Canila, Biliran, Biliran. The data indicates that 5 farmers
obtain their pigs from locations outside their Barangay, and 5
farners obtain their pigs within the Barangay.

Breed of Sampled Pigs

❏ The majority of respondents in Brgy. Canila, Biliran, Biliran


(90%) raised mixed-type pigs and were uncertain about the
specific breed. The findings indicated that a portion (36.8%)
of the pig breed comprised Large White, followed by Duroc
and Pietrain that has the same percentage (31.57%), while the
landrace breed was not raised in the area.

Animals Raised

❏ Figure 12 illustrates the animals being raised by 10 pig farmers


in Brgy. Canila, Biliran, Biliran. The data indicates that the
majority of the respondents rear poultry animals (47.37%) in
conjunction with pigs. Additionally, pig farmers in the region
also have dogs (31.58%), ( 15.79% ) cats and (5.26%)
ruminants.

Animals that Have Access to Pig Pens

❏ Figure 12 shows that 3 of the respondents permit access for


other animals to interact with the pigs. While the remaining 7
respondents in Brgy. Canila, Biliran, Biliran, restrict
interactions between swines and other animals.
