Various Endocrine Glands:

• Pituitary Gland
• Thyroid Gland
• Thymus Gland
• Pancreas Gland
• Adrenal Gland
Pituitary Gland
• The pituitary gland is called the 'master gland' as the hormones it
produces control so many different processes in the body.
• The pituitary gland is controlled by a brain part i.e, Hypothalamus which
orders the pituitary gland.
• Through secretion of its hormones, the pituitary gland controls:
 metabolism,
growth,
sexual maturation,
reproduction, blood pressure and many other vital physical functions
and processes.
Functions of Thyroid Gland:
• It plays a major role in :
o metabolism,
o growth and
o development of the human body.
• It helps to regulate many body functions by constantly releasing a
steady amount of thyroid hormones into the bloodstream.
• Thyroid produces calcitonin which plays a role in the calcium
homeostasis.
Thymus Gland
• The thymus is a small organ, located in the upper anterior (front)
part of your chest directly behind your sternum and between your
lungs.
Functions of Thymus:
• The thymus is critically important to the immune system.
• It serves as: the body's defense mechanism providing surveillance
and protection against diverse pathogens, tumors, antigens and
mediators of tissue damage.
Functions of Pancreas:
• It plays an essential role in converting the food we eat into fuel for the
body's cells.
• The pancreas has two main functions:
o an exocrine function that helps in digestion and
o an endocrine function that regulates blood sugar.
Functions of Adrenal Gland:
Adrenal glands produce hormones that help regulate:
• metabolism
• blood sugar levels
• blood pressure
• salt and water balance
• pregnancy
• sexual development before and during puberty
• stress response
