ABSTRACT

• A Wireless Technology device which is popular for extremely low power, and low
bit rate technology called Zigbee.
• Zigbee enables new opportunities for wireless Sensors and control network.
• Used globally, reliable and self healing, support for large number of devices,
Very long battery life and secure.
INTRODUCTION

• Zigbee defines a set of communication protocols

for short range communication.
• Zigbee standard is specially build for control and
sensor networks.
• Most commonly used in Internet of things (IOT)
Networks.
HISTORY OF ZIGBEE

• The concept of the low-power wireless networking became standard in 1990s.

• Zigbee alliance was formed in 2002.
• IEEE 802.15.4 was approved in 2004 and the Zigbee protocol was created.
• 2005 - Zigbee 2004 released.
• 2006 - Zigbee 2006 released.
• 2007 - Zigbee 2007 released.
• Zigbee 2007 is also known as zigbee Pro .
GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS
• Low power consumption :
Devices can typically operate for several years on a single device.
• Low data rate :
20kbs-250kbs.
Wi-Fi : 11Mbs Bluetooth : 1Mbs
• Short range :
up to 75-100 meters Indoor.
up to 300+ meters outdoor.
• Low cost of products and cheap implementation.
GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS
• Network join time:
~30 msec
Wi-Fi : up to 3 seconds , Bluetooth : up to 10 seconds
• Support small and large networks:
up to 65000 devices(in theory) / 240 devices (in practice)
Wi-Fi : up to 32 devices , Bluetooth : up to 7 devices
• Security :
Uses AES Cryptographic algorithm for data encryption and data
Authentication.
OPERATING FREQUENCY BAND
• There are three frequency bands currently assigned to zigbee .
• Only one channel will be selected for use in a network .
ARCHITECTURE
ZIGBEE DEVICES

• There are three types of zigbee devices .

Coordinator
Routers
End devices
COORDINATOR
Coordinator :
• Most capable devices.
• Root of the devices.
• One coordinator in each network.

Tasks:
• Channel selection .
• Assign an ID to the network .
• Allocates unique address to each device .
• Initiates and transfers message in the network.
ROUTERS

ROUTERS

• They act as intermediate nodes between the

coordinator and end devices.
• They are responsible for route traffic between different
nodes.
• Receive and store messages intended for children.
• It can allow other routers and end devices to join the
network.
END DEVICE

End Device
• It contains just enough information to talk to the
parent node.
• They can also sleep, which is a better option to save
battery of devices.
• All traffic to an end device first routed to its parent.

CONCLUSION

• The Zigbee standard enables the broad-based deployment of reliable wireless

networks with low complexity, low cost solutions and provides the ability for a
product to run for years on inexpensive primary batteries (for a typical
monitoring application).
• The mission of the Zigbee working group is to bring about the existence of a
broad range of interoperable consumer devices by establishing open industry
specifications for unlicensed, untethered peripheral, control and entertainment
devices requiring the lowest cost and lowest power consumption
communications between compliant devices anywhere in and around the home.
