Pulp making:

 Two main process that takes place in paper mill are

1. Pulp making
2. Paper making
 Logs of wood are cut into small pieces in barking drum then it is fed to the chippers,
‘chippers’ cuts the wood into small pieces of about 2 to 4mm thick
 The chips are screened to remove unwanted oversize chips
 The chips are fed to the digester, the chemicals white Liquor is added. Steam is turned on,
wood is digested by chemicals.
 Finally pulp Liquor slurry is passed to blow tank called brown stock
 The pulp is washed by pulp washers. and is passed to screening to remove undigested residue
 The pulp is next Bleached to remove colour residue
 Finally the pulp is refined and sent to paper making section.

 The pulp is then fed to “fourdrinier ”machine for making paper. It consist of
1. Couch section
2. Press section
3. Drier section
4. Calendar section
5. Reel section
 Couch section: The pulp is couched in couch section. The pulp contains Large amount of
water ranging from 96%to 99% A part of water is removed by pressure roll.
 Press section: In the press section. The pulp containing water about 80%to 82%. The rollers
are used to remove water content.
 Drier section: In the drier section the rest of water is evaporated by providing steam
internally, moisture is removed by woollen blanket.
 Reel section: finished paper is wound on the reel in reel section

Drives or Motors used in Pulp and Paper mills:

1.Grinders (Barking Drum)
 Grinders are used to grind the logs of wood. grinders requires 3000 to 4000kw motors are
required
 Grinders operate at constant speed hence synchronous motors are used.

2. Chipper
 It requires high starting torque hence slip ring induction motors are used

3. Washers and screening

 Eddy current motors are used for constant speeds.

ADVANTAGES:

 Reducing pollution and protecting the environment

 Saving raw materials, increasing production
 Saving investment and reducing cost
 Saving energy and reducing energy consumption

DISADVANTAGES:
 Making pulp and paper requires large amount of water is required. Hence paper mills also
discharge many pollutants which causes damage to aquatic ecosystems
 It release harmful chemicals like chlorine compounds, sulphur compounds and nitrogen
oxides which can cause respiratory issues.
