UNIT # 1: INTRO TO ICT

Overview of ICT
What is ICT?
 ICT, or information and communications technology (or technologies), is
the infrastructure and components that enable modern computing.
OR
 Information and communication technologies (ICT) is defined as a diverse
set of technological tools and resources used to transmit, store, create,
share or exchange information.
o WHAT IS ICT and its importance?
o ICT is a set of integrated technological resources that provide, through
hardware, software, and telecommunications functions, the automation
and communication of business processes, scientific research, and
teaching and learning.
Origin of ICT?
 The term "information technology" evolved in the 1970s. Its basic
concept, however, can be traced to the World War II alliance of the
military and industry in the development of electronics, computers, and
information theory.
 Who is the first inventor of ICT?
 Charles Babbage was the creator of the world's first mechanical computer
in 1822, to which he gave the name, 'The Difference Engine', which
sounds very science-fiction-esque today.
 Babbage is considered by some to be "father of the computer".Babbage is
credited with inventing the first mechanical computer, the
Difference Engine, that eventually led to more complex electronic designs,
though all the essential ideas of modern computers are to be found in
Babbage's Analytical Engine.

What is information?
 What do you mean by
information in computer?
 Information is the processed data on
which decisions and actions are based.
For the decision to be meaningful, the
processed data must qualify for the
following characteristics − Timely −
Information should be available when
required. Accuracy − Information
should be accurate.
What is communication?
 What do you mean by
communication?
 Computer communications describes a
process in which two or more computers
or devices transfer data, instructions, and
information. Figure 8-1 shows a sample
communications system. Some
communications involve cables and wires;
others are sent wirelessly through the air.
What is technology?
 What do you mean by
technology?
 technology (IT) is the use of any
computers, storage, networking and
other physical devices, infrastructure and
processes to create, process, store,
secure and exchange all forms of
electronic data.
 Definitions of computer technology. the
activity of designing and constructing
and programming computers.
