CH-5 MINERALS

Give reason
1] Minerals are mined in those regions where they occur as
ores .
A] A mineral may or may not be commercially useful . For
example , we know that iron is found in most rocks ,
but it is mined in those regions , where it occur as ores

Q2] Write three difference between metallic and non-metalic
minerals
A2] Metallic minerals –
1) The metallic mineral contain metal
2) They are found as ores
3) These mineral are mostly found in igneous and
metamorphic rocks
Non-metallic minerals-
1) The non-metallic minerals do not contain metals
2) Coal and petroleum are used as fuel Therefore , they
are also called mineral fuels
3) The non-metallic minerals are mostly found in
sedimentary rocks

Q3] What is mining ? Explain the different methods of
mining .
A3] The method of taking out ores buried under the
earth’s surface is called mining
 When ores occur near the earth’s surface they are
simply dug out . This is called quarrying
 When the ores are located at a shallow depth , they
can be taken out by removing the surface layer . This
is called open-pit or open-cast mining
 Some minerals deposits occur at great depth. A shaft
has to be dug to reach the minerals. Such a mine is
called shaft mine. A shaft mine has many underground
chambers. The miners use lifts to reach these chambers.
 Deep wells are dug to extract minerals oil and natural
gas. The process of digging wells and extracting oil is
known as drilling

and durable metal and can mixed with other metals to
form alloys . It is used to manufacture tools, utensils,
machine, railway engine and ships . There are four
varieties of iron ore – haematite, magnetic, limonite and
siderite . China is the largest iron ore producer in the
world .
