Amazing history of washing machines

19th century Played a role in Women’s Rights

The first personal washing machine appeared in 1908

1908 and its design hasn’t changed much since.

In Ancient Rome, there used to be an entire job

Rome description devoted to collecting urine, heating it
up with water, and stomp on soaked clothes.

1. Simple and easy to use 1. No use of Agitator
2. Use of Agitator or Impeller 2. Horizontal drum relies on gravity
3. Agitator also helps rinse the clothes and 3. front loader’s tumbling motion creates

1. Vertical-Axis Agitator
● Consists of two vertical-axis
concentric tubs.
● Inner tub - holds clothes, has
densely-spaced perforations for
water to go in and out easily.

2. Horizontal-Axis Agitator
● Consists of two horizontal-axis

● Instead of Agitator, the horizontal
washer utilizes fins along the inner
barrel that lifts the clothes on the
side of the drum and let them fall

Expected results

1. Gearing

● The user is expected to turn the

pedals at 60 RPM for wash cycle
and 110 RPM for dry cycle. Inner
drum diameter of 36 cm will
provide acceleration of 15.04 ms-2,
resulting in Efficient Clothing

2. Water Usage

● The diameter of outer tub is 52 cm

and length 50 cm. There is some
clearance between the two tubs of 8
cm to prevent their contact during
wash.

3. Ease of Use

● We expect the washing machine to

be easy to use by younger and older
men and women.

● No prior experience is required for

the operation as a basic cycling
