husband Pierre Curie, she

1911, making her the first
scientist to win the Nobel

Nobel Prize for it. She

Barbara McClintok was an
American pioneer in

Maria Mitchell was an
American astronomer who,
in 1847, by using a
telescope, she discovered
a comet which as a result
became known as “Miss
Mitchell’s Comet”. She
was the first woman to
become a member of the
American Academy of Arts

JOCELYN BELL BURNELL
Jocelyn Bell Burnell is
a Northern Irish
astrophysicist who
discovered the first
radio pulsars while a
Phd student at Cambridge
University. Despite
observing the first four
pulsars found, she was
not part of the team
that won the Nobel Prize ASTRONOMER
for the discovery.
SHIRLEY ANN JACKSON
Shirley Ann Jackson is an
American theoretical
physicist, and the 8th
president of Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute. Her
work for Bell Laboratories
helped make Caller ID and
Call Waiting possible. She
was also the first
African- American woman to
earn her Phd from the
Massachusetts Institute of

MAE JEMISON
Mae Jemison is an American
physician and the first
African-American woman to
travel to space aboard the
Space Shuttle in Endeavour
in September 1992. After
leaving NASA, her work has
focused on the interaction
of social sciences and
technology.
